The Final Cut Pro X CRASH Thread

Hi, I'd like to start a thread for people that experience crashed in Final Cut Pro X.

No other Applications crashes on my Mac Pro. I have never experienced crashes like

I do now with Final Cut Pro X.

During my three hours spend with FCPX it crashed about 8 - 9 times.

The Crash reporter seems to indicate that is related to the functions that use the Video Card acceleration.

It's always OpenCL / OpenGL ...

Please Post if your's crashes, too.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 6 Core, 8 GB RAM, Ati 5870

I was being a bit of a dummy and it took me a while to realize... Just in case there are a few others like me having similar issue i'll post what was happening.

i was having continuous crashes maybe 15 a day. through crash analysis i realized %90 of my crashes were audio related. I did all the recommended procedures, dumping prefs etc all of which helped me open fcp when it would crash on start up etc, but it was still crashing the same as before. then as i was looking at my (50min) project and i realized that the audio had been messed/moved around, some sort of bug thing. some was in the storyline, some above and some that i could do nothing with but delete. anyway it had happened on many of my projects and i just assumed fcpx didn't care where the audio was and was treating all clips the same. but i moved all the sound below the storyline and deleted any stuck clips and i have not had more than 3 crashes in 4 days...

hope this might help someone as i nearly lost my mind being 4 weeks into an edit and no places to turn... no project history!!

Anyone heard any rumors when/if an update will be released?

I've been working on a project for about a month and a half now. My events and projects are all saved on an external HD connected through my USB. I have had multiple crashes whilst working on this main project but they havent done any real damage just cause an inconvenience. Except for today whilst working on a project my USB came loose and I got a warning to quit final cut pro to make sure I don't lose any data. I clicked quit, re-opened my FCPX and my main project was missing... I located the project file on my HD and it tells me that the file can not be opened as it may be corrupt/truncated... All my other events and projects still work fine just this one I've been working on... and there are no other previous 'versions' I can go back to, just the one corrupt project file... Can anybody please help, is there a way I can get my hard work back? 😟

My FCPX crashes constantly when working with music from iTunes library... if I make changes to the track and want to replay it, bumm... If i on the other hand import the track to my event folder it accurs less, still unstable but better.

How can two apps by the same creator have such a bad integration.....

Apple... come on.. give us an update!

Seems to be there is an workaround for this 'text effect'- or 'lower third edit'- bug. Use fontbook to disable all 'User'-fonts but keep all 'Computer'-fonts alive.

Lateron you can evaluate the 'User'-fonts one by one ... if you like ... I mean if you have time ... and nothing else to do to fix Apples programs ...

I have a three month old Imac 27 bought to edit dslr video for youtube to promote my business. I upgraded from imovie to FCPX. I am running Lion. My crashes come mostly when adding voice overs. I can maybe record/add three short audio clips before I get the beachball and it freezes. I then have to force a quit and will loose the last clip recorded. This is a pain and very slow, and of course I have had other crashes. I can create the movies I need quickly and without problem on my macbook pro in imovie. I was in search of better colour correction and more flexibility than I was getting in imovie hence the investment in the imac and FCPX. This has been a complete waste of time and money.

With those movies which do not need voice over and do not crash I still have problems with audio in FCPX. I can have a pefectly good movie that when I export it produces very poor quality sound with crackles and pops. This is particularly noticeable with high pitched music such as flute music. The same clips and audio edited in imovie are perfect.

And final gripe is that the quality of my voice recordings are not a patch on those used with the same microphone on the same computer with garage band or other audi software such as Ableton Live.

What would be great would be if apple published a little more information on when updates/fixes are coming and maybe some advice on working round known issues. Meantime I will look in here to see what advice I can pick up.

man, i feel ur pain on that one. i've used imovie a ton to promote business (the trailers templates are great for that) and when i needed to fix the footage i am lucky enough to have FCS3, with some great plugs. I tried for two weeks to do the same with FCPX and finally gave up (lack of understanding and crashes did me in).

I don't think they will ever publish the above, as they never have to date. All the help you will get is here and at creativecow.net, and perhaps other like sites. Well, best of luck!

I bought FCP X first day it came out. Since then, it crashed at least 80 times. A few times I lost projects without recovery - days of work (paid work) just went poof. I do have FCP 7, but main reason why I bought FCP X is because I didn't have to transcode DSLR footage to edit it. I have daily backups using ChronoSync, but loosing a day of work is still a big price to pay for me. I don't use Time Machine because it *****. I used it for about half a year, but it wasn't stable, and it "locked up" on me a few times. I've spent time talking to Apple about FCP X crashing, tryied deleting .plist files and deleting/reinstalling FCP X - no luck and no solution yet - it keeps crashing. By talking to Apple, it felt like they had no idea why it was crashing and they didn't give me promises or even hope that they will fix it soon. Not good.

I bought FCP 6 for $1,800 - I loved it. I bought FCP 7 for $1,300 - I loved it. I bought FCP X for $300 - I hate it. Windows Vista is more stable than FCP X. Maybe you do get what you pay for. I would easily pay $1,500 for FCP 8 (which would be 64bit, native DSLR support and auto-render).

It is the saddast day for me today, because I'm pressured by these circustances and my clients to switching to Premiere Pro CS5. I downloaded trial version couple days ago and realized that it pretty much is FCP 8, except auto-render, but I can live with that.

No, I am not Adboe representative, and no, I am not endorsing Premiere, I am yet to find out how it performs. I've spent a few thousand dollars from my personal wallet buying Apple products and probably $30,000 buying apple products for my business. But I'm afraid that my Apple-Fan-Boy days are over.
