Q: The Final Cut Pro X CRASH Thread

Hi, I'd like to start a thread for people that experience crashed in Final Cut Pro X.

No other Applications crashes on my Mac Pro. I have never experienced crashes like

I do now with Final Cut Pro X.

During my three hours spend with FCPX it crashed about 8 - 9 times.

The Crash reporter seems to indicate that is related to the functions that use the Video Card acceleration.

It's always OpenCL / OpenGL ...

Please Post if your's crashes, too.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 6 Core, 8 GB RAM, Ati 5870

Would recommend not editing files from the desktop (or anywhere on your system drive) if possible.  Editing from the hard drive that also holds the OS will cause sluggish performance and even potentially the crash you have been experiencing.

It is possible the media file is corrupt. I run into this problem with FCP 7 from time to time and have to reimport the video.

    Hope that helps!

    Cheers.

    Thanks.

Still crashes, but only in FCPX.

MBP now at apple store to get brain transplant (they think new motherboard)

We'll see. Doea it usually take 3 days to make hardware changes?

    Will keep u posted.

BTW diagnostic check passed bit dump report implicates motjboard and graphics board.

I have 10.6.8 and Just installed FCP X. Plus did the update. It has been crashing all day and now won't open. I ran disk permissions and still won't open...

    Haven't figured a solution yet.

    An update:

I booted on a different drive, ran disk Warrior and then Disk Utilities to repair permissions. I then deleted FCP X and redownloaded/installed it.

    It still crashed upon open.

    What else can be done.

I've just installed FCPX on my MacBookPro (2.53GHz Intel core duo OSX 10.6.8). It loads up ok, but crashes pretty much as soon as I do anything. I've imported footage that I originally captured with iMovie, and dragged the main clip (about 20 minutes long) into the timeline. When I scroll through the clip (using my Wacom tablet/pen) I get the rotatiing coloured ball and then FCP crashes.

Anything I can do to get it working?

Here's the relevant bits from the last 2 crashes ....

Thanks all for telling your stories.

As you know I've had this crash problem starting when I loaded FCPX.

I took my MBP to the apple store and they "diagnosed" a problem with my motherboard.

I received it back today complete with a new MB replaced under warranty and I now have NO crash problem.

(AVCHD with AC3 still doesn't work but we're making progress.)

Seems to me that FCPX exercises some function or time sensitive operation that might have been marginal on some MB/Graphics boards. I had no similar crashes before FCPX and no crashes after it was installed if I didn't try to run FCPX.

Perhaps the new MB contains a Engineering Change (EC) which is necessary!!

I was lucky" since i was still under warranty.

I would hope Apple would honour this change/replacement even if the MBP is out of warranty because there is no way it could have been identified with any earlier software.

For those with similar crashes, and out of warranty machines, (and similar problems) insist on a No Charge correction.

Please let me know how it goes.

My MBP was purchased in February 2011 and now is one level from the current model.

    Good Luck

    update, i have 4 drives:

    2 - drobos

    1 Lacie 1TB

1 Voyager toaster with a 300gb seagate in it

I disconnected all those drives via firewire and FCP worked.

The problem is my projects are on the Voyager.

I attached all those drives and FCPx crashed right away.

I then tried connecting my Voyager and FCPx crashed

So, I tried those other 3 drives and so far FCP has not crashed.

Now I have to copy the projects over to another drive and see if it continues to work.

I am really frustrated at the amount of crashes I keep having. Difficult to replicate but often it seams around editing stills, putting Ken Burns effects on etc. I have a crash about every 20 mins. Also, I have to keep checking the 'undo' function is avaliable as if it is not it appears that the saving is also disabled. I have to keep restarting and I lost LOADS of work, about 30 mins of hard multi cam switching. I am shocked apple can release a product that is so full of bugs it is unusable, regardless of what might be thought of the program itself. Poor show Apple.

Scott - are you able to import a video straight onto Drobo? I am using canon hv40 (tape) camcorder and when I try to import video straight to drobo, the import fails gicing error "dropped too many frames". I don't get this error when I import the video to my internal hard drive on imac. Drobo is connected via firewire.

    Any thoughts?

Drobos are slow, at least the smaller 4 bay ones. I use them more for archiving. Anything active runs off of a non-drobo. Sometimes if you unplug your drobo wait a few seconds and plug it back in, it resets it and it will speed up. FYI.

    Update..

I disabled the Voyager toaster drive. It didn't matter what drive I put in it, FCPx still crashed when it was mounted.

I then copied the FCPx events and project folder from the Voyager to another Lacie drive.

It now opens, though it crashes when it begins to load the new project I worked on yesterday.

Any thoughts? I wonder if a clean install of my computer will help. Not thrilled about spending the day on backing up, reformating and reinstalling everything.

    Ideas?

    I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.66 with 8gb RAM.

    Here's what I've discovered so far ..

FCPX doesn't seem to like either of my external drives when accessing existing video. That's a G-drive and. Western digital (both purchased from the Apple Store). I tried connecting a drive to the FW800 port on my macbookpro, and also via a FireWire card.

If I copy the iMovie imported video to my internal drive FCPX still crashes when I try and load it.

So I reimported the video from camera using FCPX, and so far it seems to be working ok.

I also copied over some .mov files to my internal drive, and imported them. That seems ok so far.

Next is to try copying the newly imported project to an external drive and see if FCPX still baulks. I suspect that's going to be a yes.

So the result so far seems to be that, at least on my mbp, FCPX doesn't like working with external drives. Not good.

I have encountered a similar issue with the result that I can no longer launch FCPX. My problems began when I attempted to import my IMovie Event Library which consists of a bunch of DV material, which is stored on my internal drive.

Running the import caused the application to die a death. Relaunching it and deleting the event from the library seemed to stabilise FCPX, so I attempted something else: I tried dragging a clip from the iMovie library direct from Finder, which is when all **** broke loose. Now I cannot open the application at all. It crashes each and every time. Not a happy bunny
