Import of AVCHD .MTS files

I really would like to purchase Final Cut Pro X but I would like to check one thing. I need to know if Final Cut Pro X will import .MTS AVCHD files. These were recorded on a Panasonic 1080p Camcorder. I also have 1080i footage. I understand the methods of importing into Final Cut but I don't know if FC will work with these files. I would like to import then edit and then output to bluray.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,again.

To sum it up:

When working with AVCHD you have two options.

1. You can import directly from the SD Card — go to import from camera for that.

2. You can copy the full — with all folders, exactly everything that is on the card — contents of the SD card to a folder on your hard drive an archive it that way. If you want to import an archived SD card later on you can go to import from camera and then go for the open archive button, then point to the folder where you keep the back up of that specific card.

It is not possible to import .mts files on their own.

AVCHD on Final Cut needs camera data that is included in the other folders of the SD card.

That's why it's called "Import from camera", even if you only insert the card directly.

If you only backed up the .mts files and that's all you have you will have to convert them outside of Final Cut beforehand. I recommend to make the best of the situation and just download the free tool called "Handbrake".

With Handbrake simply convert the .mts files to mp4 with the same bitrate. You won't lose that much quality. It's really no big deal.

So, if your camera records with AVCHD 17 Mbit for example, convert to mp4 with 17 Mbits. And then import to Final Cut.

In the future be more careful of what you do: read the documentation before you delete something and try to keep a full backup of your cards. I always have a card backup in the project folder, because AVCHD doesn't need that much space anyway.

Hope that helps.

Hi The Photo Ninja, I'm afraid I'm taking you up on your offer to look at my stuff this time ha. Yup, looked at all that Dropbox stuff too. Ok, this link is for the original footage straight off my Canon HF M31.

I double did everything and basically, only "Match Sequence Settings" under export which produces an mpeg file does it look decent. Not great, but decent. Like an overused DV recording head. However, if I use the H.264 with HDTV 1080p 25, which is what my TV is, the movie begins to get jerky and stutters quite a bit after a couple of minutes.

The next link is the screwed up product of importing it into iMovie

I hope what I read about Dropbox works ha. Appreciate your time Photo Ninja. Meanwhile, I still can't get PP at half price coz there is no "Switch" option for me. I take movie length videos in full HD and not on iPhone and iMovie is a tad basic for me, but the $2k price tag may force me to use Elements instead. I just hope that it can do all that .mts native stuff as well as Pro.

OK, edited in premiere in no time flat!

I used the defaul 1080 50i format for editing.

Then I used the 1080 25p format for exporting - no changes to their default configuration. I played it back in both vlc and quicktime and it worked wonderfully. 25p seems jerky to me, but itis 25p, not 60p which is what I'm used to seeing.

First thing, congrats on the new arrival! My 2nd one arrived about 5 months ago. I totally understand what you mean when you said you couldn't reply soon. But you did. Thanks. Your product seems jerky to me too. It looks fine to you? If so, then probably I don't have sufficient RAM on my MacBook Pro or the transfer rate of my hard drive I'm running off through the media player to the TV is too slow. The media player and TV are relatively new and supposed to be pretty decent. If you want to, between diaper changes, you can check out my product on the same settings.

(sorry don't know why I can't get it to hyperlink) Like I mentioned previously, the "match sequence settings" producing an mpeg file isn't jerky. However, it somehow won't play on QT even though its got the icon on it. Is it me or is mpeg quality poorer?

Really appreciate your help. I wish your newborn good health. Most important to me.

I'm still having issues, and for the life of me cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I have the TM900 as well. When you first plug in the USB are you selecting "PC" or "RECORDER" on the screen option?

Seems that either one doesn't work well for me. It's hit and miss. I was finally able to see the camera under "Camera Archive" using the RECORDER option, and the internal memory. Once I imported the clips into FCPX, optimized the media, and now they're finally in Final Cut.

However, I went back today, to make an "Archive" of the same location so I could erase the internal memory for my next project. Now, I'm not seeing it under the Camera Archive section anymore! Regardless of the PC or RECORDER selection. It just will NOT show up anymore in the Impoort window.

Why is this so inconsistent? In addition, the SD card on the camera can NOT be read as a camera archive, no matter what I do. Is there a certain file structure that FCPX is looking for, to determine whether a mounted drive is a camera archive or not? Can it be "fooled" into reading an SD card that's inserted into the computer, as a Camera Archive?

Pulling my hair out. Camera takes such amazing video... but these formats and conversions are ridiculous.

This is EXACTL the reason I'm having problems! I took two time-laps shots on the card (AVCHD) and the rest are 1080p/60p footage. It's only pulling up those 2 AVCHD files under camcorder.

So, can I just delete these two timelapse shots, and then re-connect it? Or is the file structure that's written on the internal memory now FUBAR, and I need to just do a reformat?

Thanks for that tip guys... going forward I'll be sure NOT to do that. I'm relieved in some way, to at least know a solution.

has anyone else experienced problems since updating OS to 10.8.2 or 10.8.3?

FInal cut x no longer recognizes the files. I can preview them, but they are all batched together in a "private" folder, and I cant navigate to the individual files. I can get to them by "show contents", and the file structure is still intact, but can't navigate directly in FCP X

I tried mpeg streamclip and handbrake to import and export, but they are not being recognized.

Good stuff, Keebler. Thanks!

My material is usually church presentations that require little or no editing, which is why I usually don't import to FCP, but MTS in a folder ->Turbo264 (trimming a bit, if needed) then to Vimeo, embedded on the church web site.

Occasionally, the teacher used Keynote slides and I use FCPX to put them up in the corner of the frame for reference. I try to keep the workflow fast and simple.

Your comment about putting the media in an archive is something I will try.

Almost 2 years later the issue is still lurking...

I got a new Canon Vixia HFG10 video camera. It saves files in AVCHD. I shot 4 short videos. I transferred them to my Mac on the SD chip. The first thing I noticed is they don't show up like normal files. They came in as 1 Private Quicktime file. These do not act like normal files on my Mac either. If I click the Private file, I can see the 4 different movies. Individually, I can't delete them, I can't edit them, I can't share them. I can only view them in clip viewer. How can I free them from their prison and be able to work with them individually?

I renamed the private folder private1 and I import them into iMovie and then export them. It works but what a pain.

The way Apple is handling the entire AVCHD / MTS file issues is completely rediculous. Amateur approach to say the least.

People have transferred from the PC platform in order to benefit from the "superior" MAC video processing abilities and they stumble on a simple file recognition. Give me a break! Has anyone in Apple actually asked himself how much research people have invested for such a silly issue?

People, are troubled to find third party software and ways to convert, and ways not to sacrifice the quality of their videos.

It took them how long to add the feature of importing directly from the AVCHD camera , wow what an evolution!

I can't understand how such a "value" company repeatedly tries to ignore that a great number of their users was/ and is still experiences issues with their MTS files.

I refuse to get into the logic of 3 party software that are required to convert dowloaded MTS files with doubtful quality results (compare them with your original on a PC and you will see the difference).

If Apple is consumer sensitive company they have to address this issue once and for all.

If it is a matter of paying royalties then I suggest including it in the markup price of the product.

This is how a serious company listens to what their consumers want.

I am using a Sony HDR SR 12 and I have a almost 300 GB of m2ts files that I have stored in my PC drive, and transferred them to an external HD in order to be able to process them on my Mac Book Pro.

I understand that downloading the files directly from the camera would result in a minimal loss of quality but what do we do with our file collection that has been already downloaded from our camera?

From my research any program that will be used for converting the m2ts file to readable mac format will have an effect in video quality.

I really think that as consumers we are caught in the middle between what AVCHD camera manufacturers (Sony,Panasonic etc.) and Apple (and not only) should have resolved by now with respect to the m2ts file compatibility.

Lastly, I would like to clarify that I have nothing against FCP which I really think is an excellent product, but as an amateur viedo user I am really frustrated with the fact that I will have to compromise with the quality of my m2ts file collection when I convert them.
