Canon T2i and Final Cut Pro X?

I was curious if anyone here uses the Canon T2i, which is a pretty popular DSLR, with Final Cut Pro X. It's not listed on the official compatibility list, but given its popularity, it would seem odd for Apple not to provide support.

Just wondering if anyone has tried it yet with the new version of FCP. Thanks for any feedback!

You don't need to optimize T2i video files when importing into FCP X. I've done it several times. Works fine.

It's true that FCP X won't import from the T2i using the Camera Import option. That could be why Apple's compatibility list doesn't show the T2i.

Other reasons why there's a disparity of some people having difficulty is maybe the resolution and framerate of the original footage matters. I had mine set to 1080p (both 24 and 30fps). Maybe the 720p 60fps setting has trouble. I haven't tried that type of T2i video yet.

DO not Import, just drag and drop into FCP X Events.

(First, under FCP X Preference/Import, un-check copy imported files, so it will only create reference files/alias)

I use both Canon T2i/60D and Zoom H2 to record audio. Because FCP X is able to edit T2i/60D files natively , I skip Importing the videos from FCP X, instead I simply drag and drop the .mov clips into the "Events".

My workflow is :

#1 Create new folder in my external drive, labeled whatever project I'm doing.

#2 Create subfolder called "Volumes" and have subfolders under that called 60D Card1, T2i Card1, etc and drag/drop the folder from SD Card to the corresponding folders, this is to maintain the folder structure of the cameras's DCIM, so that previous version of FCP can do log/transfer.

#3 I then create event in FCP X Project

#4 ISelect only video files from the volumes, (I usually go down to list view and sort "kind" to separate the .THM files and easily select only .mov files, another way of doing it is do a search on '.mov' and target only the main folder were all the subfolders of all the clips are saved so it will find them in a single search.

#5 Finally drag clips to FCP X Events.

#6 Begin editing immediatly as FCP X creates thumbnails.

The advantage to this workflow is that it creates only refrence of the clips under the FCP X event folder. (Very much like AMA for Avid Media Composer, but faster) Importing the clips using FCP X will create copies of files and taking up un-neccesary duplicates of 60D/T2i footage that does not need transcoding. This will save time and drive space from copying the files because FCP X only needs to render thumbnails.

When you right click on an a clip from the Events, and select "Reveal in Finder" you find your alias clips, not a duplicate.

When i found out about this method, I tested to see how smart FCP X is in re-connecting offline clips from existing project. I deleted an earlier event that I used Import method. I wanted to get rid of all duplicate clips and work directly from these reference/alias files. As expected, the clips in the project went off line because the events link to it has been deleted. I then did the drag/drop method of the original clips under a new event and under the Project Info, I chose a the new reference events of the targeting the new linked clips, and surprisingly enough, the project found all the clips as if they were never deleted.

Another thing I learned was that it will sort all the files in sequence based on the time it was created regardless of which camera the files came from. This is helpful for me when doing multicam because it will all be next to one another in the Events.

I use T2i with magic Lantern FCPX runs great with it but my only problem is that i want to archive my cards to have a master. I wanted to use FCPX to do this becuz disk imaging take a lot longer. If anyone has found a way to make FCPX see a canon t2i card as a sd under cameras please let me know. The import from camera shows my gopro, my nikkon, but not my canon "very sad".

Make a folder on your backup drive. Drag the contents of the the Canon card into the folder. There you go, an archive.

No, you can't do it from the camera import function. You don't need to do it from the camera import function. BTW the camera archive function in the camera import window is not much longer than making a disk image. Now long it takes depends on the content.

I actually had the camera import function to work with canons.

For T2i. Just move any jpg, or THM files out of the folder where all the video are saved. You can then open it as a camera archive and set your in/out then import.

I don't do that workflow anymore since I back up all content on memory card anyways. And I link all movie file in the events. Instead of making duplicate copies.

First off to archive is to image file where they will be varified on opening. Disk image is longer and more work becuz you have to make the image then load the image instead of a streamline process of just archiving from the card in the import menu. Time is an issue as an editor. second off to just throw files around on backup is not the safest "archiving as you say". Manys times while running files off of backups or loading to backups you may have issue like cable connection, power outage,or just lost data and there will be no way for you to find out intill you see the footage. I have imaged for years now and i dont mind it but when trying to improve your craft you then to seek better and faster ways of working.and not only is it faster and safer and it is easier to send to others and is more organized. I've done speed test between imaging and archiving on the gopro and found archive to been faster if not, the same speed and it takes that long becuz it verifies. the plus is that i dont have to do the work, press button and walk away. not build image, come back later drag files (which could corrupt) and then come back later. ease. so if you find i way to code FCPX to read canon t2i card I would thank you kindly.

Tried that already, even tryed storing my .mov in my gopro card but import menu only shows the gopro footage. it has to be something with the codec/file type. I wouldn't see why apple would skip over the archive for rebels (i'm not sure if it work with d series) being that 90% indie movie makers use canons.if you hear of anything or figure something out let me know. Thanks
