No "Save as" option in FCP X?

Indeed... this is a major flaw.

To be fair, the whole program's a major flaw.

I don't know about the entire program. There are lots of editing features that are great. But all of the core essentials for workflow in a pro environment are completely AWOL.

You are right David, there is no facility to 'save as' as FCP X saves automatically, even if FCP X crashes to the desktop, your project is saved so that when you open again it's the same as you left it. This is now becoming the norm, as Lion features this in many applications, the save feature is known as versions.

David, there may be a way to achieve the result you (and others) desire by using the Backup feature within Final Cut Pro X. Essentially you duplicate the project on your backup device and then you could play around with the project to your heart’s content. When you are finished playing and want to discard the changes that were automatically saved, you would replace that version with your last backup.

Here’s an excerpt from the online manual:

“Back up projects, your Project Library, and Events

Backing up your individual projects, your Project Library, and Events should be an essential part of your workflow. Some people back up daily or weekly; others back up when a project is complete. It is suggested that you back up to an external storage device (not to your local computer).

1. Connect an external storage device large enough to hold your project and media files and verify that the device appears in the Finder.
2. Control-click your project in the Project Library, and choose Duplicate Project from the shortcut menu.
3. In the window that appears, choose your external storage device from the Location pop-up menu.
4. Select an option to specify what is duplicated:
   • Duplicate Project Only: Duplicates files specific to the project you selected. You may want to choose this option if you use the same clips in multiple projects and plan to back up your Events separately (perhaps in your backup copy of your entire Project Library and Events).
   • Duplicate Project and Referenced Events: Duplicates the project and any Events referred to by the project. Selecting this option includes all of the media in the referenced Events. You may want to choose this option if you want to have the unused media available to use later.

That's a helluvalotta work compared to simply doing a "Save As... " version

We do that all the time. I need to start a major revision on a project... what do I do? I simply do a Save As... and save it as a v2 or something... open up v2 and I'm good to go... v1 is still intact and easily found. I don't want to be scrolling through a bazillion autosaves to find that golden moment where it was a week ago after a few hundred autosaves.

This is more or less iMovie Pro.......

Yes, you can simply right-click and duplicate the project in final cut X. This is a non-issue.

Assuming you want the duplicated project to be in the same Library folders as the original projects, using the Finder, it looks like you would need to copy the Project and Event within their respective folders. And then rename them a bit so you know which one you are going to change.

Now all you FCP users know what Logic users have been going thru since Apple got its hands on that once highly professional application.

Still, just to keep it fair... Perhaps, try to spend a little more than one day with the app before regarding it as crippled. Not saying it isn't but sometimes new apps tend to do the same only much more easy than the old version.

Be that as it may, FCP was professional but as history proves (yet again) Apple is slowly killing all its professional apps. Logic, Shake, Aperture, FCP etc

Waiting a few days isn't going to magically give us the ability to edit to tape... or import XML's. ;-)

How about just duplicating in the Finder and renaming. Indeed, this is another step and I not owning FCP X yet, would recommend trying this. That does seem like they are consumerizing FCP down to mothers and fathers editing tools. Bummer.
