Follow the directions that came with your wireless printer.

Reading the instructions that came with is a good place to start. As a general rule with wi-fi printers first it has to be connected to the network. Once that is done usually OS X will sense it's there and give you the option to add the printer. However read the manual that came with it, if you can't find the manual contact the printer's manufacturer to see if there is a pdf version you can download.

Roam, can you do a little better than that?  I made the switch to MAC this week and looking forward to learning a new system.  I followed the directions and I can not get my printer to work via wireless.  I used the install disk and everything installed successfully.  I can see the printer and all the data under each tab matches printer.  The IP addresses match - it prints when connected via the USB, but will not print wireless??  I ran the wizard and it is still not working?

Any other ideas would help.  Thanks.

In your case if you can see the printer in the Print & Scan preferences it sounds like you are almost there. I would start by opening that preference, selecting the printer on the left pane and right clicking it. Then select Reset Printing System...

I have a Brother printer connected via wifi - this is how I connected, maybe it'll work for you as I think the way these various wifi printers set-up are pretty similar.

On the iMac I have wifi turned on even though I connect to the net via ethernet. I have a wifi router that has a WPA/WPA2 password. On the printer control panel (and you may have to figure this bit yourself as your menus will likely differ) using the menu button I navigated to Network>WLAN>Setup Wizard. The printer found my Network, at the next menu I had to select the encryption type of the router WPA TKIP/AES (I think), entered my wifi password, which is a bit of a palaver as there is no keyboard on the printer and you have to use the up and down keys. Once I'd input the password and said OK I got a message saying it was connected.

Back on the Mac>System Preferences>Print & Scan, Add Printer and voila.

    Hope this helps.

rk, Paul, thanks for your time.  I look forward to learning MACs - PC's have been nothing be problems for me.

Paul your steps are correct and I have it set up.  This is not a new printer and worked via wireless with my PCs.

rk, I also have an HP, it is 7200 series.  I am not connected to the USB and have a good wi-fi connection.

I reset as you suggested and it cleared all printers.  I clicked + to add a printer and my HP 7200 shows up under nearby printers (it is seeing it).  I added the printer and it shows up with a green dot and idle.  When I do a test print it says printer ready and below that says "looking for printer" but does not find it and does not print the doc.  The "barber pole" continues to search without luck.

I am ready for another suggestion.  Thanks again for your time.

For the HP have you got the latest drivers from Apple's site:

HP Printer Drivers v.2.8 OS X

I'm sure youll be pleased you made the switch from PC.

Can you let us know exactly what HP 7200 series you have, if it's an OfficeJet 7200 series these were not wi-fi printers however they did have an Ethernet connection.

it is an HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-one.

I used the disk to load and pretty sure I have the correct driver loaded, etc.  It works great when the printer USB cable is connected to my MACBook PRO.

rk standing by.  we are close, just something must be preventing wi-fi when I hit print.

I'd give those Apple drivers I linked to a shot - they were posted on 27 Oct '11 - likely they are newer than those on disk.

downloaded the drivers from your link.  thanks.

reset all again.  I only get the option for HP 7200 series.

added the HP and it is still not printing via wireless.

question for rk and his HP.  Paul same question for you and what you have listed for your printer?

Under Printer options and supplies - general tab the name is listed as photosmart C7200 series and sees the name on the network [F45BA3].

My question is below that is the Location: "it is blank."  shoud that say something?  I believe that should auto fill if required, but maybe I need to type something in there?  It does not give me an option to select any names or locations.

The queue name is correct and the driver version is 2.0.

This is a copy of mine:

How about trying to get it working via IP printing (obviously you'll need the IP address of the Printer).

Click the Add Printer button, select IP and from the drop down choose Internet Printing Protocol - IPP. Hopefully it'll find the printer and be straightforward from there.

I've done this in the past when another printer didn't want to configure as it should.

ok i tried the IPP and the IP address.  It did not work so that must be the problem?

Thanks again for the help.  I will play around with the IP address and see if I can figure it out.  Seems like it should not be this hard...It works when plugged in with the USB so not a big deal to walk into the next room and print.

I have to get to work.  I will let you guys know when I get it working and what worked.

Thanks for the screen shot.  A friend told me how to do that and I the same info listed as you do.
