iMovie v FCPX

For a non-professional, is FCPX a worthy upgrade from iMovie?

iMovie lacks any 'manual' control, esp. when you like to modify any of the templates (e.g. changing the font in any animated title).

FCPX gives you total control on that. but less ready-made eye-candy.

example:

set pic-in-pic anywhere and as much as you want (Brady Bunch).

move Ken Burns outside canvas, zoom to zil, etc.

....

As a designated iM-user since vers2, I mostly appreciate the color controls in FCPX.

And:

if you worked with iM09/11, you instantly understand FCPX.

including the stuff, old FC-users hurrays, as range based or auto tagging, magnetic timeline, precision editor ... 'we' had that for years ... 😉

300$ worth? your decision. I spend 200 for FC/e 2y ago ... would be better invested in FCPX ...

most lacking: no plug-ins, fx/scipts ... no Magic Bullet for FCPX yet.-

but Apple published a FCPX DeveloperLIbrary this night ... we'll see.

FCP X integrates pretty well with iMovie.

1) You can have FCP import all your iMovie Events. I don't recommend this unless you have a Mac Pro. It imported all my Events just fine, but then it tried to do background processing to create thumbnails and to analyze for stabilization on all of them in the background. After about 19 swap files, I decided to force quit. The Events are still there, but now it only does the background processing if I am using the Event.

2) (To your question) It enables you to import iMovie projects. It seems to work pretty well, but I am seeing a couple of broken links to iPhoto images...(possibly because I recently went to Aperture), and some titles have changed to a different font, but the basic editing is all there. I haven't tested any with the themes.

Thank you for your answer. Is it possible to start the project in iMovie and complete it in FCPX, using iMovie templates but putting finishing touches in FCPX?

I would say that is a lot of money for a finishing tool. I would also say that importing iMovie projects is an added bonus for users that want to switch from iMovie to FCP X, but there's no real point in doing all the editing in iMovie and then move the project to FCP just for some tidbits.

FC X ( might depend on the extra software update for content that Apple has put on the support sites) has a lot of "templates" already included and they resemble to a high degree what iMovie 11 Users would expect to find.

At least I see that FC X has everything from iMovie plus tons more. I can use Aperture, iphoto, itunes, garageband as Sources in the Mediabrowser - so it plays nicely together with the other apps content.

Hi busysilent

Dont know if you ever got an answer for your question:

For a non-professional, is FCPX a worthy upgrade from iMovie?

Yes it is indeed. Lots will be recognized and many new tools will be welcomed. For a iMovie user, stepping up is brilliant.

I am semipro and enjoy the workflow of it, but still work FCP7. Miss some very basic color editing like setting white balance.

But the big question is if you are willing to live with the many problems that Final Cut Pro X is having.

Very slow performance (spinning beachball), the many crashes are so bad that its keeping it from becoming what it can be. A potential super amateur, semipro NLE software.

And this is january 2012 (fcpx v 10.0.2) that these errors are still present.

So if you can wait for a working version later some time I would do that.

Karsten, there are in fact lot of plugins available both free and paid. Here are for example some usefull http://www.fcp.co/forum/9-free-fcpx-plugins-and-templates

and even Graem Nattress has made a great level plugin and then there is my favorite from Crumplepop, Tone Grade http://www.crumplepop.com/?page_id=1539?source=idustrialrevolution
