Anamorphic DV footage in FCPx.

I've tried to import anamorphic DV footage into FCP X, but I cannot get the aspect ratio to 16:9. How can I tell FC(P) X that the footage is anamorphic?

Hi!

Experienced the same problem. Tried to import standard 16:9 TV footage that is squeezed to 4:3. In FCP 7 and before I could just mark it as anamorphic and it worked perfectly. Up to now I didn't find the "anamorphic" check box within FCP X. Strange... Hopefully it's my mistake otherwise FCP X is rather useless for me. In my TV business 16:9 anamorphic is a standard workflow.

Anyone else having a solution (beside working with FCP 7)? Just curious...

I am having the same problem. Also, certain clips that I successfully captured with the anamorphic trigger on during capture in FCP7 will not show video at all in FCPX. But in other clips and in trying to recapture in FCPX I cannot figure out how to make a clip be correct as far as the anamorphic issue. Surely those of us who are still shooting DV but in 16:9 will not be overlooked. A good portion of my work is in this realm as of now. You can make the "event" or the "project" anamorphic clips still show up as 4:3. Not good at all unless I am missing something entirely???

There is no way to set the pixel aspect ratio that I can find.

However, set up a project to be DV anamorphic. Then click on a clip in your browser and then hit the info button on the far right of the screen. Click on the video tab at the top and then set the spatial conform to 'fill'. Every time you cut footage from this clip into the 16x9 project, it will be stretched to fill the frame. Needs to render though. Hope this helps. I don't know of a way to set all clips to 'fill' at once so you'd have to do each clip in turn.

I'm very happy to report that the FCPX 10.0.6 update has restored the ability to flag video as anamorphic! 😎

Or, as Apple more accurately puts it: "Sometimes the metadata tag specifying 16:9 playback in the video file is missing or set incorrectly. In Final Cut Pro, you can set this tag so that the video plays correctly with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio."

The swtich is found in the Inspector's settings view. Full details on this page:

FANTASTIC!

NOTE: As with the old FCP7, this only changes the aspect ratio of the material when viewed in the Final Cut application. In otherwords, it does not alter the tag in the source file in your 'Final Cut Events' folder. So, if you want to view that file correctly in another application, such as QuickTime Player X, you still have to make the changes using Atom Inspector (or other such software descibed in this thread.)
