Removing Silence From Tracks

Recently moved over to Mac from PC.

On my PC I used Audacity to record and edit a podcast I host. Removing silences and ummms and ahhhhs was as simple as selecting an area and clicking delete and all the tracks would delete that section and stay in sync with each other.

I am attempting to do the same on GarageBand but can only seem to remove sections from the beginning or end of a clip and that still doesn't remove the same section from each track so they all end up out of time with each other.

Am I missing something obvious here or is GarageBand simply not suitable for my needs??

GarageBand (Mac) '11, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

if audacity worked well for you, why not continue using it?

you need to select all the regions you wish to affect, then you can remove the same part from them all:
