Change location of Documents folder

Greetings. I just took delivery of a new iMac with a 256G SSD drive. The SSD drive is intended to be used for the system and apps. However, it wants to store everything on it (Documents, Music, Movies, Photos). How do I cange the default location of these directrories in the system? How do I go from of /Users/larry/Documents to /Volumes/HD/Documents?

Thanks,

Larry

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click your account, and change the home folder path so that it points to the desired location. You may wish to move your existing home folder to that location.

If desired, some applications, such as iTunes and iPhoto, can have their libraries moved separately by launching them with the Option key held down.

If you move your home folder to a drive other than the boot drive, then make sure you have an account which still has its home folder on the boot drive. Otherwise, if the HDD fails, you will be unable to start the Mac even if the boot drive (SSD) is perfectly OK.

Also, since most documents in the "Documents" folder are quite small, there is maybe some benefit in keeping most of them on the SSD.

I have two documents folders, one on SSD one on HDD. The default is on SSD. I figure that recently saved ones will be likely to be re-accessed soon, and I'd like good performance. I move old files to the HDD.

Both Documents folders are in the Finder Sidebar, so it's easy to override the default choice.
