So far I've tried A) connecting direct to the headphone socket using a Griffin Guitar Connect cable. B) connecting plugging guitar into Griffin iMic with Guitar connect cable and the imic plugged into the Apple Camera Connection Kit. I get noise but no signal. The guitar works fine into my imac via an M-Audio Mobile-pre. I feel I must be doing something wrong!

OK, I think I understand. It looks like the guitar - a 2003 Telecaster - doesn't output enough power. I connected it using my old Tascam Portastudio as a mixer/preamp and then into the iMic and everything works fine.
The GarageBand publicity makes connecting an electric guitar sound a lot simpler than it is, and a concise, clear support article from Apple would be very helpful.
I think it is a fair bet that some form of third party kit is required since the iPad lacks a quarter inch jack socket.
iRig seems to be one of the main players. The GarageBand for iOS page suggests you plug in your guitar with a link to the Apogee Jam accessory that you can buy directly from Apple. There are more possibilities here.
