Very very dark video in FCP X viewer.

Sort of getting to like FCP X.

I am getting very very dark video in my viewer. The clips look fine in the clip viewer (sorry if thats the wrong name but I mean the central window) but as soon as I select a clip and scrub through it the clip itself goes very dark and the clip playing in the viewer (the large window on the right) is very very dark, I would say maybe three stops darker than it should be. I have output a couple of clips as a QT mov file and they play just fine in QT it's just that they are showing up very dark, to dark to edit in FCP X.

Any ideas?

thanks.

Hi Ricoh.. I did ask about suitability when I bought the ATI 5870 and was told it would be more than enough to run FCPX. I have downloaded your profile, thank's and it works fine for me. No difference in clips or the viewer. It must be that FCPX does not like my ColorMunki profile. That's why I think it is a color management glitch.

Slightly more happy now.

Simple experiment- I turned off my colormunki profile and went back to the Apple profile that came with the new iMac (3 weeks old). Darkness was gone and the clips looked much better on the 2560 x 1440 monitor.

Now that I am not using colormunki profile when using FCPX, how do I know that various vids I output are going to be color accurate with other devices?

I suspect the problem may not lie with the type of profile, lut or matrix, but rather with the version of the CMM spec used to create the profile.

I normally calibrate my monitor(s) using Spyder3Elite hardware and ColorEyes Display Pro and I have the dark color problem with the CEDP profile but not the Apple provided profile--of course many other color problems cropped up using the generic Apple iMac profile.

In comparing the Apple provided profile with the one I created using CEDP I found that Apple used version 2.1 and CEDP used version 2.0 of the CMM specification. I then calibrated my iMac using Spyder3Elite Version 4.0.2 from datacolor. This software created a profile using CMM Version 2.4 and it works perfectly in FCPX.

Guess that means ColorEyesDisplay Pro, a $175 package, is obsolete.

I'm having this issue as well, but I think that it's more than just the gamma being too dark.

If you'll all indulge me, see if there are actually colors missing. For example, I shot some footage outside yesterday, and it seems like in my viewer, I'm totally missing my green channel. Grass and leaves all appear grey. Thinking in this regard, it makes sense that your display would seem dark, because there's a whole range of color information that isn't being added to each frame.

To test, I opened the vectorscope to see an analysis of the footage, and it wasn't registering any green at all. I'm not sure if it's disregarding any other colors, but I know that changing the color profile hasn't solved this issue. It's helped a bit to make things easier to see, but the main viewer still hasn't registered the missing colors.User uploaded file

This photo doesn't show the vectorscope, but you should get the idea.

I can only assume that Apple has to patch this, as it seems to be how FCPX interprets data, rather than something that we can change 😟

I am having issue #2 as well and I have an unsupported graphics card as well.

I am praying some others have the same issue with supported cards so they fix the issue. Color correction with out my green channel displaying is simply impossible. This really is a shame because FCP X just became completely worthless to me and in a matter of seconds.
