How many editors don't keep backups? How many editors who are having issues with FCP X don't bother to find out why it's doing wrong, and make some effort to put it right?

If you're getting crashes, autosave problems etc, there is more than likely some conflict on your system drive.

Create a new (admin) user on your Mac system and try FCP X from there.

I did this, and FCP X worked perfectly on the new account, meaning there was definitely a conflict on my existing system.

To be absolutely certain my MacPro's system was squeaky clean (and avoid any possibly serious health issues into the bargain) I then did a clean reinstall (not TimeMachine) and FCP X has worked reliably ever since.

FCP X application should be in your Applications folder and your project and events should all be on an external HD (formatted Mac OS Extended) and not on your Mac system drive.

I have over 4000 clips distributed between five events at the moment and FCP X is coping very well most of the time.

It helps to work without the waveforms displayed as these slow things down considerably.

Do you have FC Studio or a version of FCP on the same drive partition as FCP X? This is known to cause problems and not advised by Apple.

Andy's advice is spot on. Unfortunately, even though everyone "knows" backups are important, people usually don't take it to heart until they have actually lost something themselves.

Luckily Apple does make it easy to back things up, with Time Machine. There are multiple other options out there as well; I can also recommend both Carbon Copy Cloner for and SuperDuper! for non-incremental backups (CCC does incremental backups as well).

Bottom line, no matter what software or type of computer you use, you must have a backup policy in place, or be prepared to be very unhappy at some point.

I would be curious to know if this particular bug (where autosave stops working) has been fixed in 10.0.1 or not.

Yes -- just go to Time Machine in preferences. Then click on the "Options" button. This will (among other things) give you a list of "excluded" items, to which all non-system drives are automatically added. However, you can easily remove them by selecting and clicking the minus.

You can then add additional rules if you wish to only back up certain parts of these other drives. For example, while manually intensive to manage, I've decided to exclude all Render and Transcoded Media folders from Time Machine. Right now you need to add each of these directories individually to the exclusion list. (I've sent in feedback requesting better FCPX/TM integration due to this). If you have lots of space on your TM drive or you don't really care you can just back them up and let Time Machine prune things when the disk fills up.

I'm not sure, but I don't think backing up would help you with an autosave bug – since it stops saving at some point, there's nothing to backup. Hopefully that doesn't matter though, and 10.0.1 fixes this 🙂

Of course backing up won't help with an autosave problem but the poster (AboveAllVideo) was talking about people dying as a result of FCP X crashing etc:

My point was that if you backup regularly, the worst you can lose is up to the point the autosave failed. If people are going to have heart(h?) attacks or top themselves (sorry "do something stupid") as a result of losing a couple of hours' work, they're arguably in the wrong profession.

I restored all the FCPX files to a time where I had my work completed and it didn't change anything. My work was incomplete at the same level.

When the Undo function stops working, autosave has stopped working.

It's November 29th, and this is still happening.

I am in no way a professional editor, nor do I have much experience with editing softwares, and this is just a trial version. However, I have worked with Mac and Logic for 3 years now, and I love Logic. This, too I can see is a very good program, but yesterday I lost 4 hours (the four hours after midnight) of work on my project. I tried it again today, and I witnessed the loss of undo, and the loss of skimming - particularly whilst dealing with text, where there seemed to be some very strange, unintuitive, frustrating processes, in which the changes that I made to the text didn't have any effect. Once finished editing the text, having clicked on the main timeline area, (after the edited text had rendered) skimming had been disabled, until I pressed 'A', to revert the cursor back to 'Select' mode, where skimming came back. It then rendered for a second time (...?). I then waited for 5 minutes, to make sure that it had definitely autosaved (my thinking was that maybe it took a long time..?), and quit.

I then opened FCPX and the latest changes I made to the text (about 30 minutes ago) had been lost.

Sorry that is all a bit waffley, basically I lost some work and it was bloody annoying. I felt like I was going insane.

I am a Music Production student, and have a course deadline at the end of the week, and I am scared that FCPX will not work, and will cost me my grade.

When will Apple release an update to fix the bug?

I'm a new user and have now lost 3 hours or more work twice in the same day, ridiculous, autosave simply does not work, nor does the undo function! My project will now have to be done in iMovie, simply cannot trust FCP X and that's seriously dissapointing for an apple product!

I simply cannot believe this. How can a company like Apple do this?

I just lost a FULL DAY's WORK - every single edit. The event is still there. All the files are still there. But ALL the edits are gone. I was DONE. I went to export the file and the program crashed horribly. When I brought it back up ALL the work done that day was missing. Autosave had saved NOTHING.

Now, I Google the problem and find this thread - KNOWN AND DESCRIBED IN DETAIL going back to JUNE of 2011 - which was when the program was RELEASED? No solution. No fix? No e-mail notifying me this might happen?

This is criminal. This is CRIMINAL software. Someone shoudl do jail time over this.

Uhhh...Jack, Apple pioneered this philosophy, having used both formats since the mid 1980's I can safely say this is nothing new for Apple. Especially the last three or four years. As far as I'm concerned the Mac is quickly becoming an "Appliance".
