Selecting 16:9 aspect ratio on tv cuts off movie

When watching hd movies from the iTunes store through my apple tv on my plasma, I notice that some of the sides of the movie are cut off as the movie fills my screen. My plasma is at the 16:9 setting, and its native resolution is 1920 x 1080. Is this normal?

The Samsung plasma tv recommends to use the 16:9 setting most of the time. However, there is a screen fit setting in which there is no cut off, but there are tiny 1/2 inch black bars on the top and bottom.

To me this would raise the possibility that the movie isn't actually 16:9 at all, but slightly wider if you have 1/2 inch black bars top/bottom, and that the TV's 16:9 is forcing the wider image to be scaled to fit 16:9 losing bits at the sides.

On my TV, the "fit to screen" setting seems to keep it 16:9, but shrinks it down to fit the screen and creates the black bars. The "16:9" setting on my tv fills the screen, but cuts off the edges.

I too would prefer the correct aspect ratio. So in this case, which is the correct aspect ratio setting?

The difference that I see is that the 16:9 setting zooms the movie to fit the screen.
