Remote host did not accept data file (32)

I am having problems printing to a HP Laserjet 4000N and a 4050N printer. I get the error remote host did not accept data file (32) on a PowerPC, 2 iMacs and an eMac all running 10.3.9. I can usually just turn off the printer and turn it back on and it will then print, but of course this doesn't really solve the problem and it doesn't seem to work 100% of the time. I have tried the 4000N and the 4050N using the same printer settings on the printer and the same network cable.

I am using IP Printing with the printer type being LPD/LPR. I have another 4000N printer using IP Printing with LPD/LPR in a lab that is working fine, so I am not sure why I can't seem to get this one working. Does anyone have any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh by the way, our server is a Xserve running 10.4.3 if you need to know that.

Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Using HP Jetdirect, I was able to get 2 out of the 4 computers to print, but only after I turned off and back on the printer after I added the printer back using HP Jetdirect. I'm not sure if it will continue to work on the 2 computers that it printed from or not now as I could get the printer to work occasionally before too (sometimes having to powercycle the printer).

The computer that it won't print on stays at print file set, waiting for printer to finish and after a couple of minutes, the job dissapeared from the queue and nothing printed.

When I tried to use IP -> LPD using AUTO or RAW for the queue name, the document wouldn't print at all and would just stop the job on the Mac after a couple of seconds.

I'm almost positive that the printer in the lab was setup using IP > LPD printing and the queue name was left blank and it works fine.

Any insight would be appreciated! 🙂

Hello,

I had this problem on a Network two weeks ago. The answer was DNS. Certain IP addresses obtained from the DHCP pool were not allowing us to print to HP JetDirect Printers.

We found that there were DNS entires on the Windows 2003 server that were causing problems. We deleted the A and Pointer records for the troublesome IP addresses and it worked fine.

If you are in this environment and do not have access to the DNS server adminsistration then you could use an alternate DNS server IP in the Network preferences.

Maybe you can revert to the bad IP that you were using just to test it.

Thanks,

David
