Does restore erase all iPhone data?

When completing a restore of the iphone 3g by simultaneously holding the power and home button when plugged into the computer, does it completely erase all photos from the phone?

Yes I have tried this multiple times but the phone won't load past the apple screen. I have seen many posts on the forums that say when this happens you should plug the iPhone into PC USB and attempt a hard reset that will prompt a phone restore process. I need to know if this will wipe the phone clean of all data i.e. pics, music, and voice records.

Lets clarify a few things. Your Title Question "Does restore erase all iPhone data?"

Answer, Yes, Restore erases all iPhone data.

That said, if you want to Restore your iPhone you are doing it a bit wrong. If you are trying to get to Recovery Mode to Restore the iPhone Firmware, you need to keep holding the Home and Power buttons much longer, sometimes a minute or more to get Recovery Mode. Connect your iPhone to iTunes with USB cable plugged into computer and iPhone. Then just keep holding the Home and Power buttons until the iPhone enters Recovery Mode. iTunes will tell you with a Message Box it has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode. Then you can Restore your iphone which as you say, "will wipe the phone clean of all data i.e. pics, music, and voice records."

If you want to perform the Hard Reset which is holding both the Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds until the iPhone restarts. This will not change your iPhone, all data will still be there.
