Anyone else haveing issues where Motion 5 performs worse than Motion 4?

I'm having an issue where even simple particle emitters playback slowly. I can create the same simple effect in 4 and it plays back in real time.

I even saved a test file in 4 (which ran real time), and when I open it in 5 it plays back slower. What gives?

I´m having a strange issues with Motion 5 performance:

In my iMac 2010 (i3 @ 3,06 ghz, Radeon 4670 256 mb and 8 gb) Motion 5 is about 20-25% faster than Motion 4.

For example, when rendering the PulseHD Open Motion 4 takes 2:30 mins and Motion 5 takes 2:00 mins.

The strange results come from my Macbook Pro 2010 (i5 @ 2,4 ghz, Geforce GT 330m and 8 gb also):

With the same template this computer takes 3:20 mins in Motion 4 and about 6:30 mins in Motion 5!!!! So near the double.

Even more strange: if I make a ram preview in Motion 5 with this same template and settings that I used in the final render it only takes 2:51 mins and Motion 4 is slower, because it takes 3:25 mins!!!!!!

I forgot to say that in all the cases the render quality was set to normal and motion blur was turned on with 8 samples.

So, it´s clear that Motion 5 needs an update as does FCP X, because in my computers it crashes a lot.

Bought it today (very excited) and been playing with it for a couple of hours now, trying our a few old projects from M4 to see how they handle. So far very disappointed.

M5 feels slower, more jumpy, and generally makes it feel like my machine is really struggling.
Good to hear I'm not the only one out there experiencing issues. Hope this is addressed soon.

Back to grey old M4 for now it seems!

I'm encountering the same performance issues. At first I thought it was just me and then I Googled it and found this thread. It's definitely performing much worse for the exact same effects. This is on my 2009 17" Macbook Pro 2.66/8GB/9600.

One thing I noticed is that the interface animations (the simple sliding panes, fade in/out) take a relatively significant hit on timeline playback frames.

For instance, I threw a generator up there and it was chugging along at 60fps and when I went to reveal it's properties, I noticed a big framerate drop. Also, when there is nothing playing on the timeline, and watching the Activity Monitor for confirmation, toggling the various interface elements spikes both core usage in upwards of 18%. That seems awfully heavy to me and for something obviously non-essential. It either needs to be further optimized or somehow handled differently. Apple's whiz-bang effects shouldn't slow down the task at hand.

Also, anyone know how to switch the layout elements around? I had my inspector/library/etc on the right and I can't seem to get it back there in 5.

Nope, it is a fixed layout although you can resize panes and you can turn off individual panes using the icons - I use 2 screens and although you can stretch panes you cannot save the new layout.

Thanks - I was afraid of that. I can't imagine why they didn't take a cue from either Adobe's CS5 panes implementation, or even Cinema4D 11+. Both of those are great interfaces and to me that was my biggest reason for wanting to upgrade. The old UI was clunky and at 1900x1200 it was way too hard to see everything. Sorry, don't mean to rant - just very disappointed. The happiest I've been with this release is when I discovered that Motion5 hadn't overwritten Motion4 as it seemed. Thanks @Patrick for posting that gem - made my day.

I'm on a Mac Pro Quad with 16gigs of RAM using an ATI Radio HD 4870 card and Motion 5 is very slow, much slower than Motion 4. For example, it simply can't play back the "starfield" particle emitter in real time, even if I render at "draft" quality and "quarter" without "dynamic." Not to mention a variety of other annoying bugs.

In my view, both FCPX and Motion 5 are absolute disasters. They show so much promise, but for my needs are both completely useless as the moment.

I've really given them both a fair shot, wanting so much to like them, but I'm just disappointed again and again.

Unfortunately, it's time to look to Adobe. Apple is just getting too big and too sloppy.

I simply can't deal with it.
