Newbie to Garageband

Hi,

I just purchased a new iMac recently as well as an M-Audio Fast Track MKii audio interface. I am a complete beginner to home recording, so I am just trying to figure out the basics of Garageband at this point. No user guide came with either Garageband or the M-Audio interface, so I'm having to learn what I can from what I can find online. One particular issue I need help with is with the interface. When I plug my electric guitar into the interface and set a specific amp and effects pedal in Garageband, I cannot hear what it sounds like when I play my guitar. All I can hear is the guitar with a clean tone through my Sony studio headphones (I don't have monitors at this point). When I record some music with the amp and effects pedal settings and play it back, I can hear the specific tone that I set. How do I set up Garageband so that I can actually hear the amp and effects pedal settings while I am playing my guitar without just hearing it when I play back something I recorded? I'm sure there has to be some setting that allows me to do that. Thanks for the help!

This sounds like your headphones are plugged into your interface, right? Plug it into your computer and turn on the monitor in the track's info pane (press "i" to open it and go to the Edit tab). You might experience some latency hearing your guitar with effects.

Yes, my headphones are plugged into the headphone socket in the interface, and I can hear my guitar when I play it. It's just that I can't hear a change in the tone of the guitar when I adjust the amp/effects pedal settings in Garageband. It's just a clean guitar sound I hear. I'll give your suggestion a try and see if that works. Thanks!
