my 2008 2.66ghz 15" mbp was running at 91C (hot)
took a screen shot of the dock (using command-shift-3 and/or grab
cropped pdf screen shot so it was only the dock picture
deleted the user>library>preferences>com.apple.dock.plist file
forced quit on dock
new standard dock was created
opened dock pdf and then rebuilt the dock like it was before
problem solved

Hey, thanks, man02195. Had the same problem here. Not sure which app in the dock caused the problem, but good to get the cpu usage back down to a few percent. It was 100% after upgrading to 10.6.8 a few hours ago and the temp was way up.
Hi,
Have been having similar problems and managed to track it down to a conflict with Parallels 6. I removed the Applications folder from the dock, plus and extra folder I'd created which pointed to a Windows 7 folder, and finally all was well again.
If you have Parallels 6, it might be worth having a go?
Found this which seems to confirm my experiences!
Hope it helps in some way!?
man01295, I've been running over a day with the OS X 10.6.8 generated dock.plist with Parallels 6 still in the dock and no return to the 100% CPU utilization. This is across several sleep periods, a reboot, and switching networks from work to home. So your post advising to remove and let OS X rebuild the dock.plist file was a good one!
Thanks for sharing your solution....
Same problem here after upgrading to 10.6.8. I removed the Windows applications folder (Parallels 6) like imakers did and reestarted the dock and the problem is gone. I'll try to add the folder again and see what happens.
This is the exact problem I was experiencing, and the solutions recommended here worked perfectly.
imakers Thans.
Peralels folder in Dock caused problem.
Removing parallels 6 folder in dock fixed my problem. I was burning 100% CPU on my MBA.
Thanks
I Have exactly the same problem but had already removed Parallels 6 from my dock prior to the upgrade.
Just deleted the user>library>preferences>com.apple.dock.plist file & killed the dock.app and the cpu dropped to zero.
Thanks for your help man02195. great advice.
man02195, your solution worked perfectly - thanks for taking the time to post!
Many thanks, imakers and man02195; it fixed it for me. I had only just installed Parallels 6 when the problem occurred, but I wrongly concluded it was the Kaspersky virus software.
Thanks for the information.
Prior to deleting the suggested file, I checked to see if there was an update to Parallels 6 that would alleviate this problem. Whatever update Parallels 6 had seemed to fix the problem, too. The build on my MBP for Parallels 6 is 6.0.12092, revision 670880 and dated June 26, 2011.
Again, thanks for the help.
Had the same problem. I had also Parallels, and the dock would take FOREVER (10 mins) to appear after the boot, CPU usage at 97+. Removed the Windows App folder and reseted the dock as said, and all smooth now. Thank you man02195!
