Run applications in background
How an I set an application to start on user login, and run in the background without appearing in the dock, or when I hit command tab?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.5), 3.06 ghz, 4gb, 512mb

Thank you for your reply. As I mentioned I dont want to see it in the dock. Doing that the application still appears in the dock. I dont want there to be any visible trace that the application is running unless I go to the Activity Monitor.
I believe the application itself needs to support that kind of operation. There are some like that (for example, using the menu bar instead of the dock) and there are various faceless applications. But if the app doesn't support it you cannot hide it.
Which app(s) are you trying to hide?
Im trying to hide the Dynamic DNS Update Client software. I would like it to run in the background on some machines without any visual knowledge (the menu bar would be fine):

I found this old post about setting apps to run in the background by editing the Contents/Info.plist file within the app but I couldnt get it to work:

I thought that program did run in the background. The application is just the interface to configure the daemon which runs on startup. I haven't used it in a while, did it change, or is that not working?
Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login items and add it. Then check mark, "hide".
