10.6.8 Update Reboot causes Kernel Panic

Hi,

After rebooting from updating to 10.6.8 my Unibody MacBook 2.4GHz is having a Kernel Panic.
I swapped the HDD with an older install and it worked fine and I ran diagnostics on my HDD but it found nothing.

So I put it back in and booted in Safe Mode (where I am right now) but nothing seems to be wrong with it.

Here's the Log:

Based on another post I saw, you might need to start into Safe Mode (Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode) and update your "Metakine - Hands Off!" software http://www.metakine.com/products/handsoff/releasenotes.html

Seems like their 1.3.1 version fixes a known panic with 10.6.8.

Hi,

Make sure that you've disconnected all peripherals.

Boot from the install disk and open Disk Utility and repair permissions.

Note: If disk utility can not repair the disk then you need to take it in.

Quit Disk Utlity and install the Operating System

Do a normal boot.

Run software update.

If there is updates, repair permissions.

Thank you very much, unfortunately I couldn't wait so I attempted to repair it myself.

I ended up reinstalling Mac OS X 10.6.0 after using "mkdir" and "mv" Unix commands to move my old files to a "previous" folder and I'm still trying to access my account because it's Vile Vault protected. I wish I knew how to move my old folders out from previous into /volumes/macintosh\ HD

My stupidity amazes me, if I had waited a little longer a simple update could have fixed this issue...

Me too!! MacBook Pro4,1

After running update 10.6.8 I also got a Kernel Panic message (details, see below). I repaired permissions, repaired my harddisk, still kernel panic at start up. Than I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard. It booted up my MBP fine, allowing me to access this forum and reading that others report a similar issue (btw, I don't have Handoff from Metakine, no USB attached devices, just my MBP). Here is the log:

What should I do or not do to run 10.8.6?

Jun 28, 2011 5:48 AM in response to Philip Han

To reiterate one of the steps given by @chrisfromhopewell above:

Try disconnecting peripherals and reboot.

I had the same panic immediately upon installing 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini. It turned out to be a problem with an iHome wireless keyboard and mouse. When I disconnected their USB adapter, the system rebooted fine. I haven't yet checked to see whether iHome has released updated drivers.

I've heard that the same can be true of third-party software, which would be a pain because tracking down and disabling all the software packages on a system one by one could be quite time-consuming. Theoretically, booting in safe mode should tell you whether third-party software is at fault.

Same kernel panic ... I undid a teeny program called caffeine ... but the real problem was with connecting a USB wireless mouse in 10.6.8. I tried connecting one from Roswell, one from Kensington, and one from Verbatim ... all cause the kernel panic immediately. Note, just using the touchpad is fine ... and connecting Apple's bluetooth smartmouse is fine too.

Waiting for Lion ... don't want to spend another $60 on another apple bluetooth mouse! Also, I'm going to hunt for updated drivers from 3 these 3 manufacturers.
