10.6.8 kernel panic at startup (fixed)

**excuse my english since I'm french**

Like a lot of people, I've installed 10.6.8 through software update. And I've experimented kernel panic at startup. So, I unplugged everything (my two USB hubs with multiple peripherals) except the original Apple keyboard and Apple wired mouse. And restarted in safe mode. Downloaded Apple 10.6.8 combo update, install it and restart. Everything went fine. Great.

But as soon as I plugged back my USB hub, kaboom! here's come the Kernel Panic again.

So, one by one, I plug and unplug my peripherals. To discover that my old optical wired two button mouse (love that mouse ;-))) was THE problem. Even when it's plugged directly in one of the USB port on my Mac Pro. I've try with three different optical USB wired mouse, one Logitech, one Dell and one Verbatim (my old mouse): kaboom! Kernel Panic. With my Microsoft optical wireless mouse? No kernel panic. 10.6.8 crashes only with third partys wired mouses, except the Mac wired mouse.

Voilà.

So, I'm stuck with the old wired Apple Mouse (that I hate). But no more kernel panic.

Hope my story can help someone.

And Apple, I missed my optical two buttons wired mouse. ;-))

I have the same problem, but only on one of the two iMacs that I updated to 10.6.8.

The first installation went smoothly, and I haven't had any trouble with the mouse or anything else on that iMac. A Samsung color laser printed continues to work just fine.

The second installation seemed to have a hiccup -- after I had authorized the update there was a second update screen. That sequence finished with a kernel panic, which continued through several attempts until I unplugged the Logitech laser mouse.

That Logitech mouse works perfectly on the first updated iMac, and the other Logitech mouse from that computer causes a kernel panic on the troublesome iMac.

I'm now using an Apple bluetooth mouse, which I'm getting used to - but I would still prefer the option of my good old Logitech mouse.

Another problem is that I can't print to a networked Konica-Minolta bizhub C451. Tried the combo 10.6.8 updater and reinstalled the Konica driver -- but still no dice.

I have also run into this using my Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 on my MacBook Pro? Seems that when the mouse USB is plugged in I get the disturbing "kernel panic" and am forced to reboot without my USB.

I really prefer my wireless mouse and would like to know if there is a fix anywhere out there? Otherwise, I'll go back to 10.6.7.

I called apple support and the tech suggested rebooting the system in safe mode and then try to plug in the USB adapter for the wireless mouse. In my case, it worked. After rebooting normally after that, all worked as before.

We checked my log files and noticed that it was a "cache file" that was causing the problem with the wireless mouse. Seems related to the upgrade.

The log files are located here:

your_hard_drive/applications/utilities/console

Launch Console and then look in the left column under:

Diagnostic and Usage Information/System Diagnostic Reports/your latest log file.

The very first line of that log file will tell you what the conflict is.

So, I did a Repair Disk Permissions to my hard drive and then booted in safe mode (shift-key down) and then plugged in the USB adapter for my wireless mouse and everything worked.

Hope this helps.

Hi Walton. Sounds like I'm having the same problem. But I can't locate system/library/extensions - I don't have an extensions folder inside the library one? Neither can my imac find any tiles with .kext in them. It looks like I'm having the same problem but perhaps they're all too similar. I don't know what will fix mine. I can only use the magic mouse, I can't stand it! Nothing else will work since installing 10.6.8 😟

Your system folder is the one located in the main hard drive. Also check what I wrote above.

Dude this nailed it. I'd done in place upgrades on this machines for years.

NO Problem on older HW but got a newer Macpro 4.1 . Transported user and system over from MacPro1.1 happily running 10.6.8 for months. Got immediate grey screen crash on restart.

Dumping the CHIDKernLib.kext, CHUDProf.kext, and CHIDUtils.kext files cleared it all up.

UNfortunately firmware crash log file not getting updated to give any direct clue.

Thaks again for the pointer Airdale.

My problem was with a Verbatim bluetooth mouse (though I hear any non-Apple bluetooth mouse causes the same issue since 10.6.8). All I would have to do was turn the mouse on and the kernel panic screen would appear in less than a second.

I couldn't find the extensions mentioned by Airedale on my machine, but I did find the extension mentioned by Jossue (MouseSetting.kext). I moved it to trash, restarted my machine, and now my bluetooth mouse works again!!! Thanks to both Airedale and Jossue for helping out.

Thank you! My Wacom Graphire4 tablet and pen caused freezes and the first kernal panic I've ever gone through. Your thread saved me from hours, maybe even days of looking in the wrong places in order to fix it. I would have gone through deleting software programs I need, and they would not have solved this problem. My iMac 2007 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 crashed during sleep. I had to unplug it and start over in order to even get it to turn on again. (It wouldn't wake up, so there was no way to restart it.) The screen had been freezing constantly since upgrading to Snow Leopard, and everything routine showed delayed response- from clicking on the menu bar to opening and closing windows or working in Mail and Safari. The kernal panic was the final straw. I had installed Smart Utility the night before, which showed my hard drive was fine. The crash had me afraid that Smart Utility or a game I had downloaded had caused it to happen. I'm so glad I checked the discussions, as I usually find answers here. Your thread had the answers, and it was such an easy solution. My iMac is running with no problems now. (I haven't even rerun Disc Utiltiy to repair permissions afterwards, but I will. I did run it many times in the past few weeks.) I love my Graphire tablet, and I've used it for years, but I have no problem going back to the dreaded Apple mouse if it means saying goodbye to the freezes, hangs, glitches, and kernal crashes.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
