Update to 10.6.8 broke my optical audio - any help?

Well I followed all the instructions , and NO Luck :-)

Guess its the Analouge Audio , or what for a Fix,

Or worst case reinstall to 10.6.7 :-(

You may have already done this but just wanted to make sure when you select AppleHDA.kext, hit command I and ensure the version restored into /System/Library/Extensions is version 1.9.9f12 and NOT 2.0.5

I checked the version , and its still showing as 2.0.5

I dont know whats happening , i,ve tried installing via the instructions from the 10.6.7 combo fix as shown , but the version always stays as 2.0.5

can any one help me get the correct file ?

i,m D/Loading the 10.6.6 Combo to see if i can extract the Apple HDA kext from it ,

like i said if i try it from the 10.6.7 Combo , the file stays at 2.0.5

Where can I check what version i have installed?

I am trying that trick to install the combo update 10.6.7 applehda.kext package but the with the 10.6.8 or the 10.6.7 file it ponts the same modification date 01/29/2011 for the file.

Ps. tried to roll back to snow leopard installation cd kext but no success and the same date there...

I tried it with 10.6.6 and 10.6.7 updates , neither worked , no matter hom many times i install the Apple HDA kext , it remains the same 2.0.5

I'm having a similar problem with my MAC. All the inputs are late by about a second after passing through my interface, making it impossible to record. I've tried that fix that CNet offered up to no avail, re-installed the different kexts to no avail... This isn't the first time I've had an audio problem with OS X, back with Snow Leopard on my previous machine a ton of digital white noise was introduced apon updating; and this wasn't the initial update, either.

I'm getting REALLY tired of this, REALLY quickly. I don't have the cash to have a computer held in the stone-age for audio...

I dont know whats going on , NO MATTER how much i try i cant get that AppleHDA.kext , to install on my mini

I,m following the instructions to the letter , restarting it , and each an every time i get the same thing , 2.0.5

I,ve tried with 10.6.6 , 10.6.7 combo updates

It has to be something i,m doing wrong , as others are getting it to install ?

1 I open Pacifist

2 open the 10.6.7 Combo update with Pacifist

3 Navagate to the AppleHDA.kext

4 Highlight it , Hit "Install" in the tool bar

5 Asks me to use Admin Privileges . i say INSTALL, asks for my Password , enter it

6 Extracts files , then says File Already Exsists

7 I click Replace it , I replace all the files

8 exit Prog, an restart

9 , after re boot check file version , Command i

10 its still the same NEW version , 2.0.5 , Sat Aug 1 2009

Just came to say that I am also experiencing the exact same issue since upgrading to 10.6.8 on a late 2009 mac mini optical out to denon avr-989.

Just a quick +1 to this problem for me in the hopes that a longer thread might get more attention from our friendly Apple engineers.

To get more attention from Apple you should file a bug report

I restored the AppleHDA file from a time machine backup on my mac mini and when I restarted the machine the extension did not load so I had no sound. In System Preferences it said no optical device found I believe was the error. You can also look in the system profiler under extensions to see what is loading, if you do not see the AppleHDA in the list then it is not loading. So I rebuilt the permissions using disk utility to see if that would help but that did not work either. So I then used this command

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

at the terminal window to force the extensions library to rebuild after a reboot I had sound again.

Very long frustrating process hope this helps someone else.

My machine is iMac (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with OSX 10.6.8 and it has the same situation.

I have just noticed that Movist and VLC start playing sound after playing AC3 sound if I reload AppleHDA.

How I reload the kernel extension is to use the commands "kextload" and "kextunload" as root user.

So if you can make the following shell script or an apple script executing the shell script, your life would become easier a bit.

#!/bin/bash

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

In addition, I have to close the movie software after executing the shell script to play stereo sound again. And the movie software starts playing the sound after playing the movie for about 5 seconds in my case.

Those who have difficulties properly restoring the previous AppleHDA.kext v1.9.9f12 extension without Time Machine may try Kext Helper b7.

In my own case, although it properly installed v1.9.9f12, this did not solve my optical sound issue.

This has affected any digital output on certain

platforms. My late 2010 Mac Mini connected

to my receiver via HDMI is a problem. Yet,

my 13" Macbook Pro i7 connected via

Display Port adapter via HDMI has no problem.

The 10.6.8 update was to prepare people for the

update to Lion. I guess it is to prepare people

to expect all manor of problems.
