Appleworks I know is discontinued.  What is the equivalent of Appleworks?  Is there one?

Depends which parts of AppleWorks you used.

Word processor, Spreadsheet and Presentation functions are covered with the current editions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote (all part of iWork '09, or available separately from the Mac App Store) respectively.

Numbers and Pages can also handle some Drawing functions, although not in quite the same manner as AppleWorks Draw.

EazyDraw can open AppleWorks Draw documents.

Database documents are orphans if you don't have acess to AppleWorks. There is no near equivalwent, and there is no application I know of that can directly open an ApleWorks database document. For simple flat file DBs, you might take a look at Bento, but there's a lot AppleWorks could do that's not supported in Bento.

    Regards,

    Barry

Could I update the link: I've moved the site in preparation for the demise of MobileMe and the old URL will be replaced with a referral page once Google wakes up to the change.

This URL is the easiest to use to reach page 1:

    Roger,

Could you please explain that comment?

    (Apologies for drifting off topic.)

I've been shifting my sites off MobileMe onto other servers. First I duplicated all the notes pages, including the Appleworks page 1 originally linked to above. My idea was to block the original pages from Google and wait for it to index the new versions, but as it's been very slow to do so I then first created a page which would display a link to the new version. However looking at my stats I found that around half the people who came to the old page didn't go on to the new one, and I've now replaced the referral page with one which bounces you on to the new on, as you will see if you click this link:

    http://homepage.mac.com/rfwilmut/notes/aw/page1.html

I have a large number of pages in this and other sites so I've created a javascript which can be pasted into the original page - the code is the same for every page so it can be done in batches using QuicKeys which is a great deal quicker than amending the pages manually and having to type in every URL. The code detects the path to and name of the page, adds the virginmedia.com server address, and bounces you on to there.

For interest, the code, which goes in the head section, is as follows:

<script language="JavaScript"><!-- Hide from old browsers

    window.location=("http://http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com" + (document.URL.substring(document.URL.indexOf(':')+28,document.URL.length)))

// Stop hiding from old browsers --></script>

Note that this only works for homepage.mac.com: for web.me.com you would have to change the number before document.URL.length to 22 (I think, haven't tested it) and of course the path to the new version of the page (i.e. the folders it's in) has to be the same.

I found Pages and Numbers, but I can't find iWork '09.  Three questions:

    1.  How do you find i?
    2.  Can iwork '09 open Applework files?

    3.  Do  Pages and Numbers open Appleworks files?

iWork '09 is the boxed set comprising Pages, Numbers and Keynote: the individual applications are available in the Mac Apple Store so you can add Keynote if you need it and you will be complete.

Pages will open AppleWorks Word Processing documents. Numbers will open AppleWorks Spreadsheet documents.

Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.

Nothing will open Appleworks Database documents.

The article already linked to a couple of times explains what you can and can't do:

    http://rfwilmut.net/aw

Basically you can open Word Processing, Draw and Spreadsheet documents in certain programs, but nothing will open Databases or Paint documents.

One solution would be to buy an external hard disk, install Snow Leopard on it and boot from it to enable you to run AppleWorks.

Reading about EazyDraw, I see it says it is "vector based".  Can someone tell me what that means?  Can I basically do the same things I did with AW Draw?

    thanks.

EazyDraw does pretty well everything AW Draw will do, plus a good deal more, though its operation is a bit different so there is inevitably a bit of a learning curve. I didn't find it too difficult to get across its facilities,

Hi. I haven't installed Lion yet but I'm preparing. I was able to convert all AW documents to Pages by  selecting one, getting info and clicking the OPEN WITH and CHANGE ALL buttons to Pages. For databases, I tried the recommended method of exporting to Bento and got a mess. Instead, I changed each database to list view, which makes a neat spreadsheet. I copied and pasted the list view into an excel document and saved that in Numbers. I gues that's as Mac accessible as you can get. Nothing compares yet with the beauty of capability of AW IMO.
