Same here. It's since the 10.6.8 update. I tried the fix on the apple support page, which worked once or twice, but now it's happening again. Anyone any ideas?
This has been an ongoing issue since the latest iTunes update. On Win 7 one can fix this by closing iTunes, go to start, control panel, administrative tools, double click on services, double click Apple mobile device, click stop, then click start. Exit out of all that & open up iTunes, attach mobile device & it should show up. Works like a charm for me every time. Hope this helps anyone who comes across this thread.
You have something else going on there if you are having to stop and start a service on a regular basis. I suggest you look at uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling iTunes based on this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923. Once you have done that, go ahead and start iTunes and connect the iPhone. This should permanently fix the issue.
The first thing I did at the time the problem first occurred was uninstall & reinstall iTunes (this was after updating to the latest version) & that solved the problem for that day. The next time I wanted to synch one of our devices, I was faced yet again with this problem. Ingoogled for solutions & came across what I posted above.
While having to restart the AMDS can solve the problem, having to restart a service is not normal and finding the cause of that is important in making sure the device is working like it should. You said that you uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. Did you do it according to the support document that I provided you. It is important since any reminants of the old iTunes can lead to not being able to getting a fresh set of drivers. Also, you might want to look at this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
When you say "remnants" I am not sure what you mean. The document did not appear to explain in detail either. I know iTunes saves your music library from one install to another. NTS, I don't want to purge that. This time around I did remove all programs by Apple under the utility in Control Panel. Now poised to reinstall the latest iTunes from Apple's website & will keep you posted...........
Any older or corrupted drivers is what I was referring to. The removal of programs in Windows Control panel does not always remove all components. Also, if a corrupted file was left on the system, when iTunes went to reinstall, if it was the same size and date, it wouldn't copy over, it would pass by it. The removal based on the support document ensures all files and references are removed. Good luck.
I thought I had thoroughly perused "the document" & did not glean any details that went beyond uninstalling iTunes & related programs. I uninstalled everything I saw that was published by Apple. Can you elaborate on what I might be missing here?
No, if you followed the support document you are alright. Many people just take the time to uninstall iTunes in Control panel and not the other parts as listed in the Support document. If you removed Bonjour, Quick Time and the other components, then deleted the associated folders it listed, it should take care of it.
Hi Chris
I have the same problem, I have followed all the instructions including going to the C drive to make sure they are not there.
Firstly it is not letting me uninstall the itunes I can do all the rest but it just wont let me do it in the control panel, so I went to the C\ drive and deleted it from there along with all the other folders and files.
However when I try to reinstall it, it comes back with "the older version of itunes cannot be removed contact you technical support group" and another one is "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"
The file it refers to is itunes.msi which is in the folder apple software folder and despite changing it to go to that folder it wont do anything.
I have shut down the computer after I have made sure none of the folders/files are on the system and they dont re appear when I reboot, I have tried it about 8 or 9 times today all without success
Any suggestions
Ray

Hi Chris, I followed all the instructions but I still couldnt get it to load up, so I downloaded some other programs to get rid of it which have worked and cleared all the other stuff it leaves behind.
Managed to download itunes plugged in the phone it came back with the message
"itunes could not connect to the iphone (name) because an invalid response was received from the device"
Windows recognises it and it starts itunes but it wont go any further, any suggestions, and my anti virus program kaspersky keeps throwing up messages about it being an untrusted certificate
Have you updated to the latest version of iTunes? Ever since I have done so I no longer seem to have this problem. AFA your antivirus program is concerned, you might need to go into where it allows you to add iTunes to its trusted list of applications.
HTH! :-)
Why doesn't this forum have a "delete message" feature?
Hello Kaitster
many thanks for your response, I did all of that but it still doesnt seem to recognise it, I have tried the iphone on a small laptop and it works perfectly, but not on the main computer. As for the Kaspersky program apple & itunes are shown as being trusted.
Many thanks for your efforts though
