10.6.8 won't boot after Software Update

I've installed 10.6.8 via Software Update and the Macbook Pro will not boot, causes a kernel panic. It will boot in Safe Boot however. I've tried installing the combo update as well, no change. Verify disk permissions, no change. Help!

Uninstall the Metakine software then do the following:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions

Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Quit the installer and restart. Now download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo and update.

MetaKine issues with 10.6.8

MetaKine hands off, update to 1.3.1 before attempting an install of 10.6.8: the old version causes a kernel panic and will not allow booting after an update. As it loads a kernel extension, safemode also doesn't work.

Simple solution: boot OSX install DVD, run terminal from utilities menu:

code, enter and press return

cd /Volumes/yournormalbootdisk/System/Library/Extensions

mv HandsOff.kext /

quit Terminal and reboot

Then load Hands off app, and run the update it finds.

I was able to boot in safe mode. Move the HandsOff.kext to root as described using

sudo mv HandsOff.kext /

and entering password a the prompt.

Restarted computer and it booted fine

About this Mac says I'm now running 10.6.8 - goiing trust that it is.

Handsoff launched and asked to update - it updated fine too from what I could tell. I'm seriously wondering if Handsoff is really all the worth its trouble. Lot of work approving access for any new apps and sites. And now this kernal panic that certainly made me PANIC.

Thanks for the advice and fix.

My MacPro also refuses to boot after the 10.6.8 update. All I get is a grey screen. One time I let it sit for 20 min or so and eventually I got the flashing folder with question mark.

I'm not using Hands Off, but have the latest version of Little Snitch installed.

I managed to get the CD drive to open and inserted the Snow Leopard DVD, but nothing seems to work. Holding down the "c" key and trying to boot into safe mode go nowhere.

Any ideas?
