I managed to solve the problem by rebooting the computer while holding the F12 eject button.

OMG! Years later, your advice is still helping people. Thanks!
it will not eject
Thank you all for your suggestions. I, too, had this issue (years later, so much for progress, eh?) and the only thing which helped was to drag the disk icon to the trash. I found this solution elsewhere online and thought I'd share.

Brilliant! I also tried this first, as it seemed the simplest solution, and it worked!
Very old post, I know, but I wanted to update and say that this IS the solution to your external super drive. I tried everything and this worked!! I opened iTunes and tried to burn to the disc and out the disc popped!! Thanks!!
Thank-you, worked like a charm.
Open Disk Utility, you should see the culprit disk in the sidebar on the left. Click it's icon and hit the Eject button in the menu bar.
Apparently, this is still an issue. Or a slightly different issue; turning the drive over did not work for me. Help!
Thank god for your tip! I tried them all and this is the only one that worked! My work colleague will be lucky enough to get her family photo's back now!!! 🙂
I know this is an old thread but the upside down trick worked for me too.
Excellent! Holding down the F12 while booting up ejects the SuperDrive! Thank you!
Topbouffon's solution worked when nothing else did.
