Q: The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I am trying to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes and I receive this "The iPhone 'XYZ's iPhone' could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." I have synced this phone many times in the past without any issues and this error just started to occur. I have done all the usual: reset my phone settings, restarted my computer etc. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do?

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Jeff,

Thanks for the advice on how to restore.  That should be fine about restoring all settings.  The funny thing is that my devices actually back up with the cord (which I think is the ipsw file you mention) -- they just didn't sync.  So I'll give the restore a try.

    Best Regards,

    Dan

    Hey Jeff,

The restore to a backup worked, and now it syncs with the cord.  Thanks a bunch for your help.  What games and/or apps do you make so I can support it and tell all my friends?

    Best Regards,

    Dan

For those of us that don't speak binary, what is this beta 1 beta 2, update this and that crap?  Spell it out. Where it is, how to find out what I have, and how to fix it. Beta 2 to iOS5 means nothing to me.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I believe it has something to do with the prereleased version of iOS5 that was only available to the developers at at the Worlwide Developer's Conference.  Some person lists the exact instructions on the first page of this discussion, but it requires a log on to the Developer's website, which you may not have access to.  My suggestion is not to mess with installing any beta versions unless you're a developer as it could possibly screw more stuff up.

When I switched to back up on my computer instead of iCloud I was able to sync my iPhone.

I didn't try installing any beta versions I was afraid I would make things worse.

Restarting iTunes worked.  Even my iPod will sync now.

I tried several of the given solutions throughout this post and noe seemed to work other than a Full Restore. Not sure what caused this; the last setting that I was tampering with before I began to receive this error was when I attempted to turn off syncing to iCloud and wanted to do it to my computer.

When I turn off the iCloud syncing on my phone is when I began to get this error...

Greenhut and others have referred to a script to eliminate this issue....but what is the script?

As booldude stated... Restore the phone and use your most recent backup. I had done everything this post had suggested, but unfortunately it was the Restore that finally fixed it.

So I'm having this same issue as well. I've figured a few things out. A full reset works every time. Anytime I do a full reset on my iDevice, it syncs just fine as long as iTunes Match is off. As soon as I turn iTunes Match back on, my devices fail to sync again. I went through in my iTunes and cleared out all the thousands of playlists that were created. So those are gone and have been gone for about 3 days. However, on my devices, when I turn Match back on, those playlists are there. So even though they don't show back up in iTunes, I'm guessing they are still in iCloud? What do I need to do in order to get that fixed?

Keep iTunes Match on.  Click the sidebar and highlight the first duplicate playlist.  Put a few pennies on the delete or backspace key.  After a couple of hours it should get to the end and be gone from iCloud.  Then backup/restore your device.  You shouldn't see the error message anymore -- not the most sophisticated fix, but it worked for me.

The playlists are not on my computer. I've had them cleared off for a few days. They only appear on my iDevices and deleting them off there would take months.
