so im trying to record a sound effect and the only place i found it was on youtube how can i record that sound without having the microphone recording everything else.
Go to System Preferences > Sound and then select the 'Input' tab.
Ensure Internal Microphone is selected, then put the Input Volume right down.
This should stop the Internal Mic picking up any sound.
sorry i already tried that and it still picks up on garageband or on audacity
Have you selected (in System Preferences / Sound) the Input Mic as Line In instead of Internal Mic?
well i dont have other options it just says internal mic to select for my macbook pro
Try following this:
1. Open the utility application "Audio MIDI Setup" (in folder /Applications/Utilities).
2. Select the "Audio Devices" tab.
3. Under the "System Settings" heading, choose "Built-in Audio" from the "Default Input" pop-up menu.
4. Choose "Built-In Audio" from the "Properties For:" pop-up menu.
5. Under the "Audio Input" heading, choose "Line in" or "Internal microphone" from the "Source" pop-up menu.
If not try and add the Line-In
well i have none of those options once i open audio midi setup it takes me directly to audio devices and the only thing i can do is to add a aggregate device
If you create an aggregate device do you then have the option to select Built In Input (using the check boxes) from there you should then be able to choose Line In...

I dont see how turn the recording volume right down for the mic in system preferences doesnt work.
The only other thing I can think of is by changing audio recording settings in audacity and garageband. Turn that microphone to zero. This can be done in Garage band, not sure about audacity...

It can definitely be turned off in Garageband though....
