Scrambled screen, hardware test error 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOH, Th1H

I got a scrambled screen several times over the last two days. (I will take a pic when it happens again). MacBook pro 2007. Saw a few threads on either topic, but no clear conclusion.

I ran Apple Hardware Test, keep getting the errors 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOH or 4SNS/1/40000000:Th1H, but sometimes no error. I also reset the PRAM, same errors when ran AHT again.

Another symptom is MBP seems to be getting much hotter than before. I can clearly hear the fan though, same noise as before. I am not sure it is related to the scrambled screen though, since though since last time it happened when I turned it on in the morning (cold computer).

I also upgraded OS to 10.6.8. Everything happened after upgrade.

Hi u,

You may have the NVIDIA issue. If so, and Apple's test confirms it, repair is free. Read about it here to see if your MBP may qualify (check to see if you have the 8600 GPU in System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width and if it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues):

I actually have an ATI (ATY,RadeonX1600). I bought my Mac in April 07, so I narrowly missed the NVDA problem 🙂 I should have said that in my original post.

That GPU does not have a repair program. You may want to run Apple Hardware Test or bring the unit in for testing.

Yes, I did run AHT with the errors above. Some posts on similar threads point to faulty temperature sensors, but it is not clear how to find and replace the culprit.

True, the SNS refers to sensors. The rest I don't know about, and I'm not sure how temp sensors would cause the issue, unless something is getting too hot. What temps are you seeing?

How do I do that? There used to be a widget, but now it is not available from download. I am googling for 3rd party apps. Or there is a tool in System Utilities that I do not know about.

Everything seems OK - highest temp 60C/140F (although it shows only one of the two memory banks) fan speeds start from 2K, reach 6K.

Anyway, that (almost) rules out overheating/faulty temp sensor as a source of my problems. Thanks again for the pointer.

iStat is showing only half of your installed memory?

Look in System Profiler and see if both banks are showing up.

Yes, they both show. 1GB came with MBP, 2GB bought later on (from the Apple Store, exact match for my MBP model). Activity Monitor shows 3GB too. I am looking at iStatPro's settings, I do not see a choice to display Memory Bank A1 and Memory Controller, no Bank 2.

I just found Hardware Monitor, maybe I should try it in adition to iStatPro.

I mean I see boxes for memory bank Q1 and Controller in iStatPro, no box for Memory Bank2

Not sure what's going on with iStat. We have different MBPs and iStat does not show anythings about banks. Also, not sure if you're aware, but there is no bank 2; it's bank 0 and bank 1. In any case, this should not be connected to the issue at hand.

Sorry, Bank 0 like in Sytem Profiler. Yes, I now believe it is unrelated to my original problem. I will take a screenshot next time it happens. Thanks again for your help.
