I am getting the exact same error. Note that everything worked until last week on the Mac and still works on my Windows 7 PC.
I contacted Talking Issues by email, but have received no reploy. They produce the audio. I also had sent an email to the economist, but no reply, and had talked to the tech support person who was mystified.
I would suggest you call the Economist tech support and see if they are now officially aware of this problem.
By the way, are you using an Intel based machine? My oldie is the last month version of the Imac using the G5 chip. I am using OS 10.5.8
Hi Howard,
Yes, I believe my machine is intel based running OS 10.6.8. To my surprise, I got the 30th June issue downloaded through podcast today somehow.
After got the same error message, I logged in Economist website, was prepared to download the audio file manually to my Mac, thought I'd give the podcast subscription function another try (the iTune was brought to the background at this time, so I didn't know what had happened exactly), and voilà the 30th June issue was downloaded.
Hope it works on your Mac by now as well.
The Economist huh? I used to fall asleep to the Economist podcasts on my iPod. (Not meant to be unflattering.) Then somehow they crippled the access (I think), and I could no longer get them.
But I tried downloading a couple of podcasts about a week ago through iTunes on my iPad. Later, and after I forgot all about doing that, I tried to do some app updates and download a new app. They all got stuck. I and a few other people in Apple Support Community had been scratching our heads trying to figure out why my app downloads and updates were getting stuck when all other Wi-Fi downloading functions seemed to be working fine.

The culprit has turned out to be these two Economist podcasts that I had started to download and forgot all about. They were sitting stuck in download in iTunes and plugging up the queue.
Once I paused those two stuck downloads all my other downloads came through.
Now the problem for me is: How do I get rid of those two stuck downloads? The only options I have is to pause and restart. There is no way to just abort the downloads. (I'm NOT really expecting an answer here. I'll open up another thread for that. I just thought I would tell my story. It might help somebody reading this.)
Just speculating: I think those downloads are sitting there waiting for authentication with the Economist or Talking Issues site, and something about that has changed.
Guys,
Don't know if this will help or not as I don't use a Mac. This is speculation based on my experience with my iPad.
I figured out how to delete the stalled podcast downloads in iTunes on the iPad. I then discovered that I am now able to download the audio version of each issue from the Economist app on the iPad. I'm thinking that your problem may be an authentication issue with the Talking Issues site.
If you go to this link: http://www.talkingissues.com/magazine/the-economist
Under Audio Magazines click on The Economist (Subscriber) [at least mine says "subscriber"]
Here's an excerpt:
"The premium podcast is only available to subscribers. To set up, follow the prompts on the download page. This process only needs to be completed once, after which time your personal channel will be authorised, and your iTunes music library will automatically update each time you launch the application."
There is then a link to subscribe to the premium podcast.
(I am not able to test this out as I am not on the computer that I would use to do this.)
I hope this helps and that I am not just messing up your topic. 😊
