Your iPhoto pictures are in the iPhoto Library file in the Pictures folder. You can move the library file to your external drive. This may take a while as 50 gigs lis a lot of data. After the library is on the external drive start iPhoto while holding down the option key. This will open a dialog that will allow you to point iPhoto to the new location of the library.
You may also want to check out Fat Cat Software's iPhoto Library Manager app.
Are they in an iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Hi,
I have a similar problem. My computer broke down the other day, but my pics were saved, so now I really wan't to take a copy of them...
How do I make sure that the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
will transfered pictures be deleted from the computer (iPhoto)? Cause I'd rather avoid them being.
Best regards
You can check the format of the Disk in the Get Info window or using Disk Utility.
Transferred pics will not be deleted from the computer unless you do ti yourslef after copying the library to the external.
