now I have the cuckoo sound and cant' delete it

I've seen through my search that others have been periodically subjected to the cuckoo chime at the top of every hour. Now it's affecting my computer.

I have a new iMac that I've had a little over a week. I used Migration Assistant to import everything except Applications. I've spent the last week re-installing applications or copying them from my old iMac. On that iMac, I had the Cuckoo pref pane from toasycode.com. It was enabled, but for some reason it had quit working and I'd actually forgotten it was installed. I liked the cuckoo effect, so I downloaded a new copy of the pref pane and installed it. That's when the problem started. Now I was getting 2 cuckoo sounds every hour. One was the sound I believe toastcode calls Pure Cuckoo and the other was a much louder sound that toastycode calls Cuckoo Clock. I had listened to both when I installed Cuckoo and chosen Pure Cuckoo. Two cuckoos every hour quickly became annoying, so I contacted toastycode. They said to delete the pref pane and restart. That's when I discovered that I had 2 Cuckoo pref panes. I used AppDelete to delete both of them and did the restart. Pure cuckoo is gone, but Cuckoo Clock is not. It's louder than any system sounds and therefore really annoying.

I'ved tried everything (I think) that I've seen in previous posts:

1) I deleted everything in my user LogIn

2) I don't have Announce the Time checked in Date & Time prefs

3) I don't have iClock installed

4) I don't have any time-keeping or clock-like Widgets

5) I don't have the Chinese Calendar Widget in my user Library

6) I don't have the ChronoSync Background Scheduler installed

But I still have a LOUD cuckoo every hour.

Please help!

Did you look in the System Preferences to see of there is a special preference pane under Other. Check your console for messages at the top of the hour to get a location of the program.

Here's the Console log from 15 seconds prior to the hour until 15 seconds after the hour, but I don't know what I'm looking at. Do you see anything?

Check ~/Library/Sounds (and /Library/Sounds if that exists). Hopefully you may find the sound and deleting it will stop the hourly chime but of course that won't stop whoever is trying to use it. Of course if you're lucky whatever it is might crash and then you'll find out what it is! On the other hand the sound could be inside the app's bundle and the mystery remains.

If you do a ps ax from the terminal and post that here then maybe we can spot a possible culprit (or maybe you will see a possible culprit).

I pasted my Console log here and nobody responded, but the idea put me to work. There appeared to be several messages related to Memeo and SeagateStorageGauge. Those are applications that I installed after connecting a new external drive. I found that neither application did anything useful for me, so I had deleted them. But, apparently, neither one was completely deleted. After much digging on the Seagate site, I found deeply buried there the instructions on how to completely delete their software. They don't make doing that easy. I followed every step and I believe I got all components deleted.

I also dug around my HD and deleted all references to Akamai. I don't know what it is or where it came from so that must mean I don't need it.

After doing these things and some other cleaning of orphan files, the cuckoo stopped. I'm not sure what specific action was the solution or maybe it took a combination of those actions. I remember reading in an earlier thread that the cuckoo sound had sometimes become an error sound that replaced the basso sound for system errors. Maybe that's what happened, but in any case, I'm glad it's over!

now I have the cuckoo sound and cant' delete it
