Problems with kernel panics when sleeping since 10.6.8

Hi folks,

I installed 10.6.8 the day it was issued, and since then have had some very odd problems with sleeping my Mac Pro. Intermittently, it goes into a half-sleep state when I request sleep mode; the fans still spin, but the sleep light pulses. It refuses to wake up, requiring a hard reset. The console logs show:

Sleep: Drivers Failure Panic

The specific panic is:

panic(cpu X caller 0xffffff80002251fb): "TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU bitmap: 0x101, NMIPI acks: orig: 0x0, now: 0x0"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.15.3/osfmk/x86_64/pmap.c:2741

where cpu X varies between any one of the 6 cores.

So far, I've tried

Resetting the PRAM and SMC
Disabling a raft of sleep related options (Wake on Bluetooth, etc)
Reinstalling the 10.6.8 update via the Combo updater
Repairing disk permissions
Reinstalling from the factory DVD and re-running the combo updater

And no doubt other things I've forgotten. The only thing that seems to fix it is to not install 10.6.8; when I reinstalled 10.6.4 (the factory OS), it slept and woke fine 10 times. As soon as the combo update was installed, it started sleep crashing again after 4-5 attempts.

I'm assuming this is some rogue driver bug introduced in the .8 release, but I've not seen anyone else suffering the problem. I would roll back onto .7, but will obviously need .8 to install Lion when it arrives.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I've missed, or has anyone else seen this problem?

you should as you are finding always keep a bootable backup before updating.

there are 3rd party driver issues (there have always been such issues with every update btw)

5970? maybe there is a suspect.

Woops, sorry - typo. I meant 5870 (Apple provided). As far as I know, I'm not running any 3rd party drivers. The only non-Apple kernel extensions loaded are Parallels, which I've unloaded (and the problem persisted).

I should also mention, the Apple Hardware Test passes the machine.

I'll check out those two forums and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the advice!

It varies slightly (sometimes some extensions are unloaded, sometimes not). The BSD process name changes almost every time; anything from Window Server to Mail.

Yes, I saw that, but it doesn't seem at all related to my problem. My machine is running fine, modulo this sleep problem. Also, I've disabled the Parallels Kernel Extensions, without any success.

Exact same problem here: Mac Pro not wanting to go to sleep since 10.6.8, almost same kernel panic (different thread). Please let us know if you figure out what's going on.

Ah. Sorry to hear that Speleding, but it makes me feel rather better that I'm not alone. I've run out of possible diagnostic options on this end, and it seems pretty likely this is a 10.6.8 bug. I've filed it with Apple's Radar bug tracking system.

Well, I tried a bunch of things and just managed to successfully sleep and wake it again. Then I tried undoing all the things I had previously done to track the problem and... still sleeps successfully. The only more or less permanent change I did was resetting NVRAM (cmd + option + P + R) (I know I should have done a restart right afterwards to see if that was the fix, but it seemed like a long shot).

I'm not confident the problem is fixed though. One other circumstance today is one of the first days of summer with temp above 24 C in my office, I wonder if that caused a problem. That should still be within the normal operating range of a Mac though. I'll let you know if it happens again.

I managed to "fix" it for a few cycles - it seems to be an intermittent problem, firing about 1 in 4 sleep/wake cycles. The only fix I've found is to roll back to 10.6.7 or earlier. We'll see what happens when Lion (or another SL patch) arrives.

I downloaded and reinstalled the update again (mentioned in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3142845) and have gone through about 8 sleep wake cycles without any issues now. 🙂

A hardware fault that only manifests in one version of the OS, and doesn't have any effect on day to day operations other than sleep? I've been heavily stressing the system whilst it's awake (all 6 cores, all the memory), and it's never so much as glitched. I even fired up Civ 5 for a few rounds to make sure it wasn't the graphics card - it behaves fine. I suppose it could be a latent problem the new OS has revealed, but the fact that Speleding is suffering the same problem makes me suspect it's a driver bug they've added in the new release (albeit one that only seems to affect certain systems).

Speleding, what's your setup? Mines a Hexacore with a 1 gig 5870, SSD main drive (with normal HDs in other bays), 8 gig of additional RAM, all hooked up to a 27" Cinema display.

As I mentioned, I've got a bug filled in Radar. As it's a desktop, sleep isn't so massively important, so I'll wait until Lion ships. If the problem persists even there, I guess it'll be time to trek to the Apple store (not an easy task with the Pro case!).
