Problems with kernel panics when sleeping since 10.6.8

Hi folks,

I installed 10.6.8 the day it was issued, and since then have had some very odd problems with sleeping my Mac Pro. Intermittently, it goes into a half-sleep state when I request sleep mode; the fans still spin, but the sleep light pulses. It refuses to wake up, requiring a hard reset. The console logs show:

Sleep: Drivers Failure Panic

The specific panic is:

panic(cpu X caller 0xffffff80002251fb): "TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU bitmap: 0x101, NMIPI acks: orig: 0x0, now: 0x0"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.15.3/osfmk/x86_64/pmap.c:2741

where cpu X varies between any one of the 6 cores.

So far, I've tried

  1. Resetting the PRAM and SMC
  2. Disabling a raft of sleep related options (Wake on Bluetooth, etc)
  3. Reinstalling the 10.6.8 update via the Combo updater
  4. Repairing disk permissions
  5. Reinstalling from the factory DVD and re-running the combo updater

And no doubt other things I've forgotten. The only thing that seems to fix it is to not install 10.6.8; when I reinstalled 10.6.4 (the factory OS), it slept and woke fine 10 times. As soon as the combo update was installed, it started sleep crashing again after 4-5 attempts.

I'm assuming this is some rogue driver bug introduced in the .8 release, but I've not seen anyone else suffering the problem. I would roll back onto .7, but will obviously need .8 to install Lion when it arrives.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I've missed, or has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks,

adamw

you should as you are finding always keep a bootable backup before updating.

there are 3rd party driver issues (there have always been such issues with every update btw)

5970? maybe there is a suspect.

Folks, I also have developed this very annoying crash issue. It started last week and the system crashes constanty. I am also running Parallels and using an SSD on a MP1.1, however I swapped out the SSD but I did do a direct copy of the existing boot drive. Until this thread I was thinking that I had a CPU issue.

I noticed that mine usually involves CPU 0 thru 3 (I upgraded to dual quads last January). Here is one of my many crash logs. I am anxious to get this resolved so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

How many of us with the problem are using multiple monitors, or a 27" Apple display (including the one baked into the iMac)? Apple Engineering are currently having me test without my extra displays connected, which is proving tough (rummaging under the desk before sleep is tedious). Would be interesting to find out if any sufferer is using just one display.

Greetings, I'm running a Mac Pro 1,1 with 2 regular Xeon 5355's, 16GB RAM and a Radeon HD 4870.

Also, I recently updated to VMware Fusion 3.1.3 and that's when the problem started. Anybody have a good way to fully uninstall and unload VMware so I can see if the problem is with VMware?

I have a similar problem since 10.6.8. My Mac Pro would put my monitors into sleep mode out of nowhere. As far as I can tell, nothing else is sleeping in the system, because if I was playing music or watching a video, it will continue to play the sound. However my monitor can't be waken regardless of what I do. After rebooting the system, I will still run into the same problem with my monitor suddenly going into sleep.

I tried zapping PRAM, I tried SMC reset via the methods given on the Apple KB to no avail. What's really odd, is this behavior continued in all environments, not only when I'm on the desktop GUI, even when I'm booting to safe mode (command prompt only), and running hardware diagnostics with the supplied disc. It seems whatever "sleep mode" that the system insists on doing with my video card is "stuck".

The only thing that fixed this for me, is doing a hardware SMC reset. Pressing that little button located between the first and second PCI-E 16x slot, located besides the battery on the logic board. Since this button is hidden by the video card, I had to remove the video card to get to the button each time this has happened.

I have one crash log which may or may not be helpful at all, since it was somewhere in middle of my attempt of trying to fix this problem... so there could be other factors involved. Most of the time I didn't get a kernel panic crash log, because the system didn't crash, I just couldn't turn on my monitor therefore had to perform a manual shutdown/restart.

Hope this doesn't persist in Lion 😟

I just suffered a kernel panic after using Parallels too. (It's been slow recently, and I've not got the problem described with the 100% CPU.)

I'll post my report in case it helps anyone...
