I have an apple tv connected to a 51 inch plasma and I dont see much difference when renting sd vs hd video from the iTunes store. The quality seems similar with the hd version looking slightly better. Do you feel the same or do u see a significant difference?

It will very much depend on your Tv and it's scaling abilities. I have 3 1st generation models and 3 2nd generation models in use, the difference in quality varies from one to another, to the extent that on one TV I can hardly notice the difference, to another TV where the difference is so profound I can spot it without my glasses and my prescription is +175.
So are you are saying that my tv is able to scale up 2d well enough where it looks almost as good as the hd video?
It sounds like it.
All TV's have scaling units, otherwise SD content on an HD TV would appear much smaller and be surrounded by black space. Scaling can be done in different ways, some are better than others.
to really see the difference between take 1080p and 720p you have to move 0.9m closer to the screen
to really notice the difference for 1080p you need to be 2meters from the tv
with 720p you need to be 2.9meters from the screen
with SD 720 X 576 you can be as far as 5.4meters away
