Insightful FCPX tutorial made by 10-year old

Stumbled across this video of a 10-year old giving a tutorial on how to use FCPX:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7p-t_5prIE

Looks like Apple succeeded in simplifying editing for 10-year olds! Maybe the "X" (pronounced "ten") in FCPX is the minimum aged skill level required to operate FCPX? If only this 10-year old could legally be paid for editing, we could call him a pro!

I know, I'm mocking FCPX by insinuating that the skill level required for FCPX is that of a 10-year old -- but isn't that the selling point that Apple is trying to push??

But all joking aside, I really do have to applaud this young FCPX-user for his insightful tutorial and hope he continues to learn and grow into a professional editor and storyteller! I gotta admit - it IS refreshing to see that FCPX is captivating such a young userbase to explore editing. If this is the trend that Apple is going for -- I am all for it! I just wish I was 10 and as excited as this young editor-in-training about FCPX!

By the way - I noticed his use of the "Earthquake" filter from FCPX. Wicked, right? Is that what the kids -- I mean Pros - I mean FCPX-users call "cool" these days? Sorry for the confusion, as Apple PR would point out, what's the difference between "Professional" and "Amateur" and evidently, "10-yr old kids" these days?

Looks like David Pogue from the NYT has met his editorial match!

Actually, I am grateful that you mentioned this video, as I am a 64 year old geezer who found his quick tutorial fun and useful. Now I know how to do pip quickly and easily.

I personally think your FCP---RIP2011 is incorrect.

For me, FCP=FCPX, as I just couldn't afford the $1000 for the Studio, and found its software way to complicated. Half my screen time now is on the web, where X is perfect to build video.

I never see a tv crew with more than one camera, and one operator. Seems to me that in awhile, when folks actually take the time to use X, it will be very much a Pro Application.

The "kid" market doesn't care about Pro or Non-Pro, they care what works. And then they go to High School, College...and use what they know in the pro markets.

Indeed, I agree with Hugh. After all, what makes it a Pro App or Not?? The interface? Take a look at DeVinci! The fact it doesn't have AAF? Oh yes, that archaic, not used, useless, out of date format! OMF, Automatic Duck has a plug for that. No XML? To use in what? Have you seen how complex the timeline can be? Infinite, magnetic tracks! How can you put that into something FCP7 or anything else (there's tonnes of possibilities) can use. But even so, they're going to. I'm already in the process of getting it (xml) to interchange with all the other apps.

Maybe your feelings are this way just because you haven't waited the customary 3 months (the time it takes after every new product apple releases) for the rest of the developing community to come up to scratch with Apples new software/hardware. The same is true for almost every new product Apple has ever released. Wait 3 months and then we can start being soothsayers for FCPX (pronounced Ten!).

Hope you don't give up on it. You might feel a bit foolish if you give up on something the rest of the Pro-Community has the foresight to start using and learn up on. Rest assured, as a seasoned 'pro' I am convinced for now at least it is the future of editing and is very much worth sticking with.

I use it regularly to get my audio to professional sound mixers.

"OMF, Automatic Duck has a plug for that."

Avid does not require 3rd party support for something so simple and widely used.

"No XML? To use in what?"

Color grading/finishing

"Maybe your feelings are this way just because you haven't waited the customary 3 months"

Maybe. We'll see. But it sure doesn't look good for anyone making a living with FCP. Apple can afford to lose FCP. They have much MUCH bigger fish to fry.

"...as a seasoned 'pro' I am convinced for now at least it is the future of editing and is very much worth sticking with."

The future of professional editing and post production will never truly be great if done by one person. It needs to get into the hands of specialists. If I am a client that needs a certain look and willing to pay it. I would be pretty upset if all that time and effort went into one person's limited talents. Jack of all trades, master of none.
