Can't Print after Software Update

After completing an Apple software update which included Epson printer software update 2.7 I am unable to print. I get an error message; Error:/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents/ MacOS/rasertoescpll failed. Can you please assist? Printer is Epson RX 650

I had this problem with the RX640; it seems to affect a lot of Espon printers going back a long time, not just the latest update. Apparently some resourceful person out there says it is due to trying to print a pdf generated from word and various other programs and getting rid of this many-headed beast of a problem can be quite tricky.

I first followed this http://kb.epson-europe.com/display/4n/kb/article.aspx?aid=3744&searchstring=&n=& tab=search&bt=4n&s= epson knowledge base article's instructions but had no joy. I then reinstalled Rosetta off my Snow Leopard install disk (which as an aside involved fixing my broken dvd drive!) and again had no joy, even after wiping the print settings, running the gutenprint uninstaller, deleting the drivers and trying to install the printer again using software updater. It seems like Epson software update 2.7 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398 on the Apple website does not work properly for selected Epson printers.

To the solution. I downloaded and installed the previous Epson software update http://support.apple.com/kb/DL900 from the apple website and this finally did the trick. This is a beast of a file at 850MB compressed, containing drivers for ALL of Epson's printers so it does eat up some drive space. However as my printer is working again, I don't care!

FYI I have read various solutions that were successful for various people. I am not certain if the last step alone would have been sufficient to get my printer working or if the previous Epson KB steps and Rosetta reinstall played a part. I hope this issue is resolved in Lion in a few weeks time altho given Epson's past history, I'm not very confident.....

I am far from a wiz kid geek, but I do try to research updates before I install them to see if others have run into trouble. If your software update included the new 10.6.8, that very update may be the cause. Others who installed this10.6.8 have run into situations where printers no longer work. I have read that Apple will have to correct this somehow. Until it does no 10.6.8 for me. HOWEVER, if you go to "macfixit" you will find several workarounds. I was just at the site, and they offer procedures there that can be performed by most who have at least some expertise with macs. It's a start.

I am not sure if it was the Epson 2.7 Update or the OS X.6.8 update that prompted the issue. I have seen suggestions that neither were to blame, rather that when one attempts to print a corrupted pdf, the printer driver goes haywire and refuses to respond from then on. Further support for this theory is that the issue dates back to 2009 if you look thru related discussions; there is some correlation with software updates though.

I am still running 10.6.8 and have reverted to Epson driver bundle 2.6 from last February and all is well. This is really not that terribly complicated a solution: delete printer settings by option-clicking the minus button below the printers list in Print & Fax settings; then download the epson bundle http://support.apple.com/kb/DL900 and install it. I admit all my meanderings leading up to that point were confusing but the ultimate solution is pretty doable and not a hacky workaround. Hope I've helped someone anyway!

I also have the same issue with not being able to print after the three updates were installed. Two of the three were the 10.6.8 update and the Epson driver update. However, this was on my iMac. When I was prompted to run the update on my MBP I ignored the Epson update. I can still print from the MBP to the Artisan 810. I have looked on Epson's troubleshooting page and there's nothing that relates to this. The iMac does not give me any kind of error message. The only prompt I get is the printer icon in dashboard shows a red triangle with a 1 inside it. When selected I see "Printer paused", so I Resume. Still goes back to Pause mode. All I can do is delete the job. This is a repeating cycle and I cannot print anything from the iMac. However, I can still scan in documents wirelessly from the Artisan to the iMac, and I can still print off a copy from the printer itself. Seems to be a glitch between the computer and the printer for printing jobs only so far as I can tell.

Is there a way to clear this "resume" problem? I have turned everything off several times with no change to anything. At least the MBP prints fine. This is on a wireless network for both iMac and MBP.

Any advice appreciated. Also, is there a way to remove the driver update once it has been applied?

Thanks!

You definitely should look at the "macfixit" article. Just type "macfixit.com" into your browser. It's about the fourth or fifth article down, just scroll and go to the next page, if needed. Follow step by step, and if that is too difficult for you, you might call the Apple folks for assistance with your problem. Simply put in my own language, there is a failure in one step of the computer software that issues the "print" command to the printer. The error manifests itself after applying the 10.6.8 update. The solution is to copy the correct step in the process from an earlier Time Machine version that you have to replace the troubled step in 10.6.8.

. . .Sounds daunting to me who is anything but a wiz kid, but seems easier the more I read it. I am holding off with the10.6.8 update until something is done by Apple for this--and who knows when that will be. Some advice: always check Macfixit to see what kinds of problems people are having when they apply new updates before you apply any new updates.

I agree that macfixit is the way to go for fixes and to make sure you don't walk into a problem.. However that fix is beyond most normal users or at least most normal users wouldn't risk it; even using Pacifist probably scares people off too.

As for Apple pushing a fix, I wouldn't count on it. Only 2 weeks to Lion release date so that is the priority. I wouldn't be surprised if Lion contains plenty random printer bugs too. Drivers suck.

Madasastick, I completely agree with you.I, for instance, judge myself to be a typical user, and I am scared as **** of trying a solution like the macfixit solution. If it didn't work, I wouldn't know why--including whether I might have flubbed something up in the process. So, where am I? I definitely am not going to apply the 10.6.8 update--at least yet, and I'm sure as **** not going to upgrade to LION when it first comes out. (I would wait to see what bugs there are in any case, besides the printer/bugs issue.) Where does it leave me? I am forced to wait and hope that Apple does something to remedy some of these and future issues. It has in the past. No reasonwhy I can't wait atleast two or three months if I have to--I have done so in the past before applying Leopard and Snow Leopard updates.

Folks, it is unlikely an Apple update will fix matters. Printer manufacturers have for months had the clues they needed to upgrade their drivers to keep up with specs on http://developer.apple.com/ Unless printer manufacturers write their drivers to specs, there is nothing Apple can do to force them to do so. Printer drivers fail all the time, both in the Mac and PC world. The unfortunate thing is printer vendors want to do all things for all people and in the end please no one.

There are plenty of compatible printers out there, and plenty of multifunction printers. The best you can hope for is to nag the heck out of the printer vendors to rewrite their drivers when an update comes along you must have. In the meantime, only upgrade backup drives temporarily to see if an upgrade breaks something. Learn how to clone*:

It is the safest way to recover your information if an upgrade should fail.

Anne,

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you or others do not have a solution for calcaratum, please stay out of this thread. It is best if you start your own topic here:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard?view= discussions

You'll get a wider audience and won't confuse calcaratum with issues that don't apply to them. I've already posted my printer FAQ, and you should look over it carefully for solutions. If there are none, it might be best if saving the printers are your primary goal, to return the new Macs, and get older ones that can run the operating system that can run those printers. See my other FAQ*:

note printer manufacturers frequently are out of step with Apple and it is best not to upgrade your Mac or buy a new one until you know your printer manufacturer is in step. Otherwise you'll get experiences like you just had.

Anne,

This very thing has been happen ing to many apple users after updating to 10.6.8. Sure, Apple is never going to admit to it. HOWEVER, there have been a few "fixits" that readers and others have found. There are three things to suggest: 1) stay within this thread and GO BACK through responses . . . you should find a few solutions. To me, "going back" means two or three weeks. 2) go the "macfixit" web site (type macfixit into your browser) and scroll back a few pages until you hit their treatment of this topic . . . they have a solution. This site is run by professionals. 3) you will find that if you put something like 'can't print after os x 10.6.8 update' into your browser you will get some very good help here (this is because this has been so big of a problem involving many people).

In the future, besides always backing up before an update, be sure that you investigate to see if there have been any problems that a number of people have encountered. You can do this, for example, by going to the "macfixit" website, or to this Apple help.

For me, I always use combo updates vs. the software update when comes to updating os X. Further, there is no way that I am updating to 10.6.8 until the bugs are dealt with by Apple---Lion or no Lion.
