I'm trying to figure out a way to print from my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to a WiFi canon printer. I have tried to pair the printer using both the iPad and iPhone but neither found the printer. Any help would be great.
Since you don't have an AirPrint printer that won't work.
You can try a 3rd party app such as Printopia or Print n Share, or use some hacks on your computer. Don't know what kind of computer you have so use Google to find them. Be aware your computer will always have to be on to use them.
You can also check the Canon website to see if they have an app that will work for you.
You'll need to go to the App Store and see if Canon offers an App (many printer manufacturers do) or, a more successful option would be for you to (again in the App Store) buy and download a more robust printing application. Printopia and Print Central (I have print central, which works great) are two many have used successfully.
Can printopia or print central function without having a macintosh computer hosting the share, ie. can I take my ipad out and print directly to the Canon printer?
I use Print n Share and PrintCentral (from the App Store) to print directly to a Canon Photosmart Plus AIO printer from my iPad and iPad 2. No intermediate computer is required. These apps work with several Canon printers.

Can you print from all apps on your iPad?
Print n Share registers with Airprint now as a printer so you just have to have opened Print n Share since last restart (I think) and then you can use Airprint to first send the print data to Print n Share for it to handle printing.
Can you just select print or are there extra steps involved
You need to select print from Print n Share after the task gets handed off to it.
