That's true but you'll need currently pricey SSD drives to get that kind of performance. Hopefully you'll be able to swap out SATA drives for SSDs down the road. It's kind of a crap shoot.

It seems there are technical and financial reasons for the uptake of Thunderbolt being so slow.....

Looking for external case for backup disk etc. USB 2 is just too slow, could really do with Thunderbolt.

Don't want raids or SSD at the moment, buth with lack of USB3 or eSATA in MacBooks, would love to see Intel and Apple come up with some sort of push on this...

The delay in encolsures and other devices makes me think Thunderbolt is having stability issues, especially after looking at a lot of Thunderbolt/Displayport ( usually conversion to DVI or HDMI ) cable issues by various vendors.

But that's purely speculation...

I'm tired of seeing encolsures with ( expensive due to the hard drive shortage issue ) hard drives in them. I already have ( much cheaper ) hard drives! =P

A lot of encolsures are flaky out there. I would love it is apple would make their own enclosures they would do it right.

I just got the Seagate GoFlex Thundebolt adapter and put my Apple 256GB SSD on it from my MBP and I was able to transfer the Lion Install file (4GBs) in about 20 secs. I would say that's smoking. I have not seen any stabilty issues with that or the actual 1.5TB drive that goes with it. I love it. The adpater is $100 from Seagate. Got mine yesterday.

Correct me if I'm wrong - the $100 adapter is useless without GoFlex enclosure? And Seagate doesn't sell enclosures alone, so you need to get entire portable hard drive for another $100?

Not necessarily, I had already purchased the 1.5 TB  Firewire 800/USB 3.0 drive from Best Buy. But if you have a spare SATA drive laying around it should work. In my MBP - 2011 i7, I had the Apple SSD 256GB, replaced that drive with the OCZ Vertex 3 480GB and since I had the Apple 256GB laying around, I thought I would give it  try. Worked like a champ, not to mention the incredible transfer speeds front the SSD/T-bolt combination. Of course the Seagate drive worked extremely fast too. I purchased the Seagate T-bolt adapter from Seagate directly. They told me that they are shipping on a first come basis.

One thing I noticed in System Report, under Serial ATA is that the controller reports a 6Gb Link with a negotiated speed of 3Gb's for both drives (SSD & 1.5TB) so I assume that if you can find a newer generation drive, i.e. Vertex 3 or OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G, it should negotiate at 6Gb's. Also, it gets warm after a few moments and the adapter itself is almost the same size as the attached drive.

Concerning the price, Its pricey just for an adapter, but I love it. I just backed up 57GBs in about 3.5 minutes.

That's great performance and sounds like a good option if you need only 1 external drive, the seagate or the LaClie (comes with drives tho).

All the more reason want the JBOD thunderbolt enclosures NOW...

For the past 6mo, have 9TB just waiting to be thunderbolted! Bring it on!

I'm on the fence with Tbolt.

E.g. I want a new MacPro that would include Tbolt port(s). No 3rd party cards (yet). And No Refresh from Apple.

I want external arrays (2, 4, 6, 10 removable drive raids) with Tbolt, FW800, eSata and USB3.0 interface and removable drives. I've read bad news on the QC of Promise hardware. And the high cost to average joe.

(I am still reeling from the vintage of the Xserve RAID array...great design with Apple abandoment..I had one with 14 500GB sata drive in it. Connected by FC)

But what frustrates me is that: Apple includes Tbolts on the latest macbookPro models, mini and iMacs.

None of these are workstation-class hardware. The Mac Pro is er, was...

The cables are $50 each and not included (not with Macs nor with devices that are out)

Yet Apple easily added Tbolt ports to the "least expensive" Mac, the mini. (which I will likely buy, and add an array along with BlackMagic video device)

But were are the PCIe cards with Tbolt ports?

We have USB3.0 PCIe interface cards.

We have eSata and Portmultiplier cards.

No other mac has eSata nor USB3.0.

Reminds me of the days of SCS3 and Mini-AAUI connectors...

Intel says they are on moratorium for a year. Well, its been OVER a year. And 3rd party vendors (newertech, sonnet tech, ...) are all claiming "soon". Intel says there is a delay because the strict adherence to the design and implemetation isn't taking off as quickly. chirp chirp.

I think there is more than being disclosed. Thoughts? 

Hi, Im thinking about getting the seagate adapter aswell and pairing it with an SSD, I really wish they would sell cases on their own so to make the product more "complete".

If you get a minute could you post a picture of how the drive looks in the adapter?

The speeds sound good, In your opinion how do they compare to say if the drive was fitted internally?
