Imported videos are too dark

I just purchased Final Cut Pro X, thanks to new low price, and finally a new interface that makes video editing easier. (I actually like the new interface, iMovie simplicty means less learning curve)

However, I am having problems with all the movies that imported from websites, and cameras. It appears too dark, as seen in screenshot:

(Note the original video, which is located in QuickTime X, and video found in Final Cut Pro)

Here's another screenshot, with Final Cut Pro at the front:

Is there any way to fix this issue? Is this due to issue with graphics card?

Hello!

I have the same problem on my MacBook 13", early 2008. I could buy FCPX in the app-store, but the graphiccard inside the computer isnt OpenCL compatible.

FCPX is running, but in the viewer it looks, that the green channel is missing.

Changeing the color-profile had no effect.

I hope, Apple will correct this.

I also have early 2008 MacBook, but I bought Final Cut Pro X on my company's Mac Pro, where I do most of my post production.

Since it was purchased under my account, I went ahead and installed it on my home MacBook as well with no problem. (did not even say that it was not compatible since it has no OpenCL when I tried to download on my MacBook)

I tried to buy FCPX for my Mac Pro, early 2008, but it was blocked to buy, because its graphiccard (ATI Radeon 2600) isnt OpenCL compatible. Then i copied the application from my MacBook 13", early 2008 to my Mac Pro and the application is running without any problems. The viewer-problem is only on my MacBook. I have an third computer, an MacBookPro from 2011 and FCPX is also running without problems.

It seems that the viewer-problem is an graphiccard-problem.

Hey, there are a few threads like this. I have the same issue. From what it looks liked, FCPX isn't recognizing the green channel in your video (in your attached screenshot, look at how the green in the background appears grey in the viewer). To double-check, select your clip in the timeline, then view the vectorscope. If i'm correct, you'll see that there's no green color data that is being recognised.

I don't know if this is a graphics card issue, or something that has to be patched, as the green does come up in the timeline.

The rest of the image appears darker, because (and again, this is only my hypothesis) of the range of green color data that isn't being added.

Yep, you are right. While color is screwed up on the viewer, the exported file looks normal. So it seems there is something wrong with Final Cut Pro software itself.

Most of the production content, (especially color correction) I use my Mac Pro at the company, and that, everything looks great in viewer. When I use my MacBook, the green color is missing, which is causing the discolored video in Viewer.

PS: For those whining about FCP X, stop it. It's actually very good app, and while everyone is still griping about the stripped down feature, I feel this is the future of professional editing: Very professional app, while also keeping it easy to use with less learning curve. (especially for people who want to get into film making but want to spend less time learning the app)

How would calibrating the monitor change the difference in color between 2 different applications? Quicktime X looks fine but in FCPX too dark? As far as I understand it calibration will change the global environment. I'm having a somewhat similar problem: Colors look fine in FCPX timeline as well as exported video file in Quicktime. When I bring the file into Compressor 4 or 3 the file is very dark and over saturated which would indicate a gamma shift. I'm running a quad core macpro with all updates and a dellU2711 calibrated with a Spyder III. I experience the same problem if I export directly to Vimeo - Vimeo Video file too dark and saturated and it does not look like it did on the timeline. Previously I edited using a Black Magic HDMI card and ignored the time line but no longer have that option with FCPX but can't use the program like this. I have the exact same problem with files exported out of Motion 5 - Any ideas??

Starrate, the color issue migrating over to Compressor is news to me, but it makes me think that whatever issue FCPX is having is hard wired into Compressor as well.

If so, hopefully, Apple will fix this in the next patch.

I've had issued exporting directly to vimeo as well, but when I export to a file, and then upload the file, it works fine. It's an extra step, but it should help out.

Thanks to a blog I found today by DUNCAN DAVIDSON

FINAL CUT PRO X AND ICC V4 PROFILES

http://duncandavidson.com/blog/2011/06/fcpx_colormunki

The problem is with ICC v4 profiles. I use ColorEyes Display Pro to calibrate my old Cinema Display monitor which by default outputs an ICC v4 profile. If I switch to the default Cinema Display profile which happens to be a v2.1.0 specification, it brightens right up but is way too bluish. I made another profile with v2 specs and the video looks fine.
