Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
iMac 2009 - after 10.6.8 no more wake for network access - is a sleep issue because i tested several approached to see what is the problem. If the computer enter in sleep mode then i cannot wake remotely. Anyone with the same problem? (vnc user, etc)

I'm having the same problem -- after upgrading 10.6.8 the wake on lan doesn't work anymore... Not sure how to do this workaround: replace IONetworkingFamily.kext with 10.6.7 version as I don't run Time Machine back-ups. Any suggestions? Or do I have restore to 10.6.7?

Tried to update with the last 10.6.8 (or the supplementar update)? The fix is not mentioned, but who knows... In alternative, try to restore 10.6.7 kext and set privileges as they are now (attention, they are not the same inside the package, and I figure using recursive permessions set was the mistake):

10.6.8 contained a modified version of /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext, more specifically /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/Intel82574L. kext.
I replaced IONetworkingFamily.kext with the version that was present before the 10.6.8 update and my WOL now works once more.

Some additional info to perform this:
Apple has changed IONetworkingFamily.kext without changing its version #.
Here is the simplest way to replace the new one by the old one: display the content of the kext, and check the version of Intel82574L.kext as mentioned by GeekyPaul. The version of this component has changed.
Use TimeMachine on this component in order to easily find the previous version.
When done, recover the whole old IONetworkingFamily.kext, and not only Intel82574L.kext.
This bug has been reported to Apple.
This is what I just did to get the old IONetworkingFamily.kext with no time machine backup:
Download the 10.6.7 Combo Updater here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
Download Pacifist (program to extract .dmg files) here: http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg
Install Pacifist (open dmg and drag to Applications).
Do not install 10.6.7 Combo Updater.
Move your existing IONetworkingFamily.kext from /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext to a folder on your desktop so you have it in case something goes wrong.
Open Pacifist (Applications>Pacifist) and drag the MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7.dmg file onto it.
Hit the little arrows on the left to open:
Contents of MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7.pkg > Contents of manual > Contents of SUBaseSystemCombo10.6.7.pkg > System > Library > Extensions
Find "IONetworkingFamily.kext".
Right-click and select "Install to Default Location".
Then scroll back to the top, and expand this:
Contents of MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7.pkg > Contents of manual > MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.7.pkg > System > Library > Extensions
Find "IONetworkingFamily.kext".
Right-click and select "Install to Default Location".
Open Disk Utility and run "Repair Permissions". Then reboot your computer.
After the reboot, I was able to put the Mac Pro to sleep, and wake it up with WoL packets from several different machines.
I talked to Apple Care support who said that the problem will be noted and this thread will be referenced in the note to the engineering guys. I'm hoping that means they will fix the problem in another update eventually...
I am having this problem on a machine that doesn't wake that is running OS X Lion. It's a Summer 2011 Mac mini with all updates to OS X Lion, so that is 10.7.1 as of this writing. I am trying to access it via Screen Sharing (or SSH, neither work when the mini is asleep--but both work fine when it's awake) from an OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard MBP (late 2008--with a removable battery), but I can't imagine that the 'hey wake up' machine makes any difference.
JKadin's fix did not work for me. Yes, believe it or not I tried applying 10.6.7's IONetworkingFamily.kext to OS X Lion 10.7.1 and it seemed to be applied correctly via Pacifist (and I did repair disk permissions right after), but no result: the mini didn't wake up via either SSH or Screen Sharing. When I tried to copy the original (newer) extension back (After clicking the Authenticate button and entering my admin password), then repaired permissions again, OS X Lion complained that the extension wasn't installed correctly (during the permission repair process) and that I should 'reinstall' it, whatever that means...
JKadin, if you're reading (or anyone else) and know how to reinstall an extension (this particular one) in OS X Lion, pray tell (doing a System Update doesn't say I need anything, of course). Everything still seems to work, and it has the 'new' (June 29, 2011) extension listed there, so hopefully I won't have problems in future--but if there's a way to reinstall it properly (I just copied it back over into the Extensions folder in System/Library and repaired disk permissions again, but that gave me the error mentioned above), so knowing how to reinstall it properly would be great to know!

The fix proposed at the macrumors link above: "setting other access means (like Ethernet, Firewire, and Bluetooth) to inactive" doesn't work for me either. I am trying to wake from WiFi (*not* with an Apple Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, but with a Netgear WNDR3400). Yes, I can connect fine via port 22 and port 5900 with SSH and with Screen Sharing when the OS X Lion Mac mini is AWAKE, but not once I put it to sleep--so the ports are opened correctly on the Netgear.
Hopefully Apple will fix this for both Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and OS X Lion (10.7 and 10.7.1 at least) as well.

I've never tried it, but maybe this will help? It's an app to install kext files. (Besides copying the file, you also need to fix the permissions, remake the cache, etc.)
I don't know much about how WoL works over Wifi. I would suggest using an ethernet cable from your iMac to the router and testing the WoL that way to see if it's a problem with Lion WoL or if it's a wifi issue. Sorry I can't be more help...

The repairs process *after* using KextHelper (at the cheetha.net link) did not give the errors, so hopefully that did it. KextHelper *did* crash (meaning I had to Force Quit it) before I could reboot my system as it recommended, but it said it successfully completed and gave me the "cross your fingers and reboot" message before it wouldn't respond.
I did do a Repair Disk Permissions (while KextHelper was still running, so perhaps that mucked it up somehow) right after running KH, so if I was going to do it again in future, I'd say, close down KH first, then reboot, then repair permissions (in that order).
Once I rebooted (and repaired perms again for good measure), all was well.

WOL wasn't working for me on 10.6.8 and I don't use Time Machine. Followed jkadin's suggestions from his Sept 10 post, and now all is good and WOL is working again. Thanks jkadin!
I suspect this issue only affects those of us using non-Apple routers -- Apple is concentrating on their fancy new router-integrated "wake-on-demand" features and forgetting about those of us that don't use 100% Apple hardware for everything in our lives.

I have been experiencing the same issue with my iMac, which goes into a deep sleep that causes it to drop off the network during sleep, making it impossible for me to wake it remotely for file sharing. I reinstalled Lion, updated to version 10.7.3 and the problem appeared to be gone, until I installed some programs. After uninstalling some programs one by one, it seems that this problem is being caused by Adobe flash player. When it is installed, I cannot wake the imac remotely. Is this a coincidence?

Note: I did a step by step implementation of jkadin solution and my network card stopped working! My computer stopped connecting to the network. No access to internet, to router, attached disks....
The solution of jkadin seemed to have worked for other users so do try it out, but ***make sure you made a backup*** w/ TimeMachine before trying it out.
I fixed it by rebooting the imac and pressing CMD+R for rescue mode and using TimeMachine to restore a backup. (took me 3 hours to restore it)
iMac mid 2007 running latest OS Lion 10.7.4.
Router Linksys WRT610N v2 running DD-WRT mega v24 sp2.
My iMac is still asleep. :'-(
Only solution working at the moment seems to be ssh into iMac and reboot it (sudo shutdown -r ...).
However I have a couple of user accounts at home computer (one for me, one for girlfriend) and I would have to disable this and have my computer to automatically log in to my account (no password !!!!) which is an obvious security risk...
This seems to be a long standing issue. Why isn't Apple fixing it ?!??!
This solution is for those of use running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ONLY. It will not work with any version number of Lion or any other OS then SL 10.6.8.
