iChat launches but crashes whenever I try to use it

I can launch iChat, but whenever I try to chat with a buddy or even check my preferences, iChat quits. I tried deleting the plist files but that didn't help. My iChat also quits if someone tries to send me a message. Recently ran software update and am now on OSX 10.6.8. Thoughts?

HI,

Have you moved iChat ?
Either out of the Applications Folder or creating a sub folder, say, for IM apps and putting it in there ?

Are there any Messages about it in Console ?

Are there Crash Logs?

In Console open up the Reveal Triangles to see ~/Library/Logs and look in Crash Reporter

Alternatively navigate to your Home Folder/Library/Logs/CrashReporter and double click the file to open in Console (it will open a separate window this way)

iChat is made up of four bits in Snow Leopard, the App, and 3 support bit called Frameworks tucked away in the System side of things.

If iChat is moved the path to the support Folders is different.

Hopefully any Console Log or Crash Report may help us.

Can you go to the app and do a get Info (CMD and I key together)

In the Panel that Opens what version does iChat say it is ?

At 10.6.8 iChat should be at version 5.0.3

Hi,

The Original Poster says they have used a different route to solve this due to other issues with th computer

However Chax and possibly iGlasses may cause issues if they version you have does not match the OS version.

The Chax version you mention is for Snow Leopard/iChat 5.x

There are other options for earlier OS versions.

iGlasses is at version 2.1.5 currently, which covers 10.4 upwards but an earlier version may not be fully compatible with Snow Leopard.

Having said that, Disabling or removing Add-ons is always a good idea during testing.
