I have an iPad 2 and want to be able to design my own templates for invitations, labels, and such. What do I need to do to be able to do this? Apps??

You need to get apps that are appropriate for what you want to do. I'm not sure what you mean by "template" - these are usually associated with a particular app. Apple's Pages is a word processor that you can use to write invitations. But you really need to provide us with more information for what you want to accomplish. For example, labels - do you want to print labels from the iPad? That may be a problem as the iPad has limited printing capabilities that depend on the brand of printer

I don't necessarily need to be able to print directly from my ipad, I can forward to my e-mail and print from my desktop. I want to be able to layer images found online and fonts to create my own designs. when I said labels I was thinking water bottle/ candy wrapper labels. I'm new to the whole app thing and I'm having a really difficult time figuring out how to find the apps that are appropriate for what I want to do.

You are looking for something like Photoshop or GIMP for the desktop. I havent seen any apps in the store with the kind of capability you are looking for. The iPad is not realy optimized for tasks such as high level graphic design; the screen is relitivly low resolution compaired to a desktop screen and the iPad is also lacking in the computing power department for creating a high quality label at 300 DPI.

Besides graphic design software, for printing you will need an iPad (AirPrint) compatible printer. Whatever graphics app you consider, make sure the app supports printing from an iPad.

iOS: AirPrint 101

I'm not sure if Pages is ideal for creating the invitations, etc., but this link is the Help menu that might give you an idea of how Pages for iPad works.

I downloaded iDraw - which is an Adobe Illustrator wannabe for the iPad. You can export to PDF and other formats using iDraw. iDraw also supports file sharing. File Sharing is the iPad/iTunes way to send files back and forth from the iPad to your computer and back again.

This site will tell you about iDraw.

This is a link to iOS File Sharing which you will find useful as well.

There are third party apps in the app store that will allow you to use virtually any printer even if you don't have one of the HP AirPrint compatible printers.

You can even use an app like Pages to create your templates. You can insert art and photos into Pages and it supports file sharing as well. Pages is a Word Processing app and I would be inclined to not use it for your purposes but it will work for some basic designs however it's certainly not ideal for creating artwork.
