Like the Dock. Used to launch your favorite applications or documents.
If you are referring to Lion's LaunchPad, then go here for more info.
It's a new feature of Lion.
From their documentation:
Launchpad
A home for your apps.
Launchpad makes hunting through an applications folder a thing of the past. Just click the Launchpad icon in the Dock to open a full-screen view of all your apps represented by their icons. Click an icon to launch its app. Create folders of similar apps by dragging one app onto another, and delete apps from your system with ease. And all apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are automatically added to Launchpad, ready to go.

Hi, pardon my inexperience, but isn't Lion not even available yet? I have LaunchPad on my Mac Book Pro but running only Snow Leopard. I'm confused.
That's correct. Lion comes out in July. If you have a LaunchPad app, it must be a 3rd party program. There's nothing native on Snow Leopard called LaunchPad.
Is it an app in iTunes/iPad/iPhone?
I don't have any idea! I'll call Apple tomorrow because I don't know how I got the program. Thanks for your thoughts.
You probably have Quick Pick installed...

I understand Launchpad is supposed to be an easier way to view whats in your App folder but why are many things from my App folder not in Launchpad? Ie Skype, Coupons, Lexmark, Microsoft Silverlight? Maybe only things that you need to 'launch' to open? So then maybe Lexmark or Silverlight open automatically? But Skype should be there? Do I need to physically drag things from App folder to Launchpad? Applecare said all apps should be in Launchpad but t hey are not
