I'm a little late to the game in finding this thread; but if you have a Nikon, Canon, or Sony camera, with WiFi capability, this app is really quite useful. It MAY work with a cable on some cameras and tablets; but I've found that it DOES NOT work with any cable between a Nikon camera and an iPad. Please read the app notes, as not EVERY model of EVERY make of camera is supported. (Although, the app updates show that they are consistently adding new camera models.)

The app is called: qDslrDashboard ( dslrdashboard.info )

You can find it in the Apple Store at: itunes.apple.com/us/app/qdslrdashboard/id912760548?mt=8

$9.99

- or -

on the Google Play Store at: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.qdd&hl=en

$8.66

They have a desktop computer version as well--if you want to use a computer as your display screen. It's more than just a "viewer". It allows you to control a wide variety of the DSLR's functions as well. Ultimately, it's a way to set up your shot without having to touch your camera. I can't say enough good about it; but its up to you to decide if it's right for your circumstances. I have no vested interest in this company and have nothing to gain from sharing this with anyone. Here are some of the functions that they advertise:

* Multiple camera support

* Live view your DSLR

* Change camera properties

* Remote capture

* Synchronized capture

* Connect to DSLR using protable wireless router (ddserver)

* Start/stop movie recording on DSLR

* Custom bracketing

* Focus stacking

* Browse images on camera or on DSLR SD card

* Preview images (jpg and raw)

* Download images from camera SD card

* Audio initiated capture (with spectral display and frequency/intensity selector)

* LRTimelapse screen for capturing time-lapse sequences

* Live view histogram

* Manual focus movement while in live view

* Time-lapse

* DoF calculator

* Rule600 calculator

* Sky stacking helper

* Custom profiles

* Remote control over wireless network

* Support for WU-1a/1b adapter (PTP/IP)

* Dynamic Perception NMX motion controller support over Bluetooth LE

* Interval controller

I want to use the iPad as an external monitor because the lcd monitors on the Canon 5,7 and 60D are very small.

I wanted to buy an iPad for personal things but also use it as an external monitor.

You can agree that seeing an image on an iPad is a bit easier then looking at it on a tiny camera screen.

The reason I want to try hooking it up directly into the camera is because there is a slight delay with the wireless tethering.

Yes, i checked out your google search, thank you for that. I also found those links, but thought maybe someone here would say he created an app or knows of a way.

Seems like for now it is not possible.

It sounds like you do want to shoot with your 7D tethered to the iPad and to use it to generally view pictures you've taken. I've done a bit more searching and I agree that it appears to not be possible at this time. Using the camera connection kit you can copy images from the SD card to the iPad very quickly, though, and view them (the 7D does use SD cards, doesn't it? I don't remember). I know theoretically it is possible to shoot tethered to a laptop or desktop, but I've never done it.

Shooting photos (Taking stills) and tethering it to an iPad is possible.

But I haven't found anything about live view of a video. I shoot video and less stills.

It's also due to the speed of the USB connector, and the eye-fi is too slow to tether video as well.

Hopefully a USB 3 wil be available soon, or maybe that new thunderbolt connection 😉

7D is CF cards, I have a Canon 60D which is SD cards.

"Shooting photos (Taking stills) and tethering it to an iPad is possible."

Please explain how this is possible, to do it in real time without having to manually copy the files over. Again, you shoot the picture, and instead of it displaying on the camera's built in monitor, the picture displays immediately on the ipad. USB + some sort of app? Please let me know. Thank you!
