Split one long clip into smaller ones

I have a project for an amateur dramatics group production that I'm editing.

I filmed it on two cameras, in one long take for each half of the show.

It was filmed over 5 nights so I essentially have 5 'takes' of the show. I want to be able to split the half's down into separate acts so I can pick and choose the best parts to get one great show.

I can't seem to find a way to do this. I can obviously slice the half into acts in the timeline, but I can't find a way to make the cuts into separate events that I can put together in another timeline.

Has anyone found a way to do this yet?

(Sorry if it's a bit hard to understand!)

Thanks,

Chris

this is a very different way of thinking, so i can see why you are confused.

try this:

in the event browser, go to the beginning of what you consider to be a scene. press the I button to set the in point. now, go to where you consider to be the end of the scene (it is inside the same, big, 45 minute clip that you want to "split up into smaller clips". When you are there, press the 'O' button to set the out point. you should now see a yellow box around what you consider to be a 'scene' and which you want to be cut into its own clip.

now, press command-k to bring up the keyword window. Type in the word 'scene' and hit enter.

you should now see the word 'scene' inside your event on the left. go over and click on the word 'scene'. you should now see only one clip in the event browser, and that is the very scene you set the in and out point for. This new 'clip' can be dragged to the timeline, and it is only going to be the single scene, not the whole 45 minute raw clip.

if you do this same thing for each scene in the big clip, you can then access them in the event browser as separate clips by looking at them by the keyword you assigned to them.

Basically, the keyword is taking the place of the old 'subclip'.

You can then drag each of these subclips to the timeline as if they had been cut up with the blade, but instead, they are cut up by keywords.

hope this helps you!

The way to do this is to use keywords in the event browser.

In the event browser, use in and out points on the clip to select a range, and then add a keyword (command-k) to it. Do that for each section of each clip you want to make separate.

For example, you can use the keyword "scene 1" for the first scene of each of the 5 takes. Then if you look at that keyword, only the first scene from all 5 takes will appear, each as a separate clip. Then you can drag whatever you want to the timeline. You can use the auditions feature to try out different takes on the same timeline.

Make sense?

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know if theres a way to do that in the timeline? I already have markers set for the scene changes, but if I either set in/out points or slice the scene and apply a keyword to it, it still applies to the entire act.

While a keyword event shows up for Scene 1, the entire act is in there and not just the scene.

That video was very informative and will be useful for another project I have, but it still doesn't do what I need for this one.

That method works well if I already had each scene split into separate cips, but instead I have the raw 45 minute-long clip of an entire act that I need to split down into separate clips so I can sort them by scene.

Yes what hafken said. I am telling you, once you get your head around this it is the "same" thing at least functionally.

BTW, "I feel your pain". I had a certain way I used to work in FC and my workflow was a certain order I happened to like that made sense to me. Now that I understand that if i do my upfront work a little better/different editing to the "storyline" is a snap.

Hafken,

Thanks, that was exactly it!

Favourites work if I'm only taking one portion from one clip, but keywording works perfectly.

I should be able to blast through it now 🙂

Daniel, that was exactly my problem, I've spent the last 6 years or so using it so it is a big brain change!

Thanks again guys!
