powerbook wake from sleep problems.

i have a powerbook G4 1GHZ 512MB Ram running 10.5.8. works great except for one incredibly annoying problem. it doesn't wake from sleep! at least not properly anyway. weather closing the lid or doing it from within the OS it seems to go to sleep fine but when i open the lid or press the power button it doesn't fully wake. i hear the computer turn on but the screen never turns does. the keyboard and trackpad are also unresponsive and i don't hear the hard drive running either. the only way for me to get it working properly again is to hold the power button until it turns off and then turn it back on. everything else works perfectly fine. I've been searching the internet for days now and have found a number of people with similar (but not identical) problems, but i have yet to find a definitive solution. shutting down my computer every time i have to go somewhere is really starting to get on my nerves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem on my G4 MDD desktop model. Solved it by resetting NVRAM using open firmware.

Restart your mac & immediately depress the Command+Option+O+F keys which will display the Open Firmware screen. Then type the following:

reset-nvram Then press the Return key & type:

set-defaults Then press the Return key & type:

reset-all Then press the Return key & your Mac will reboot.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

If you are using a wireless internet connection, try this:

Open System Preferences > Network and make sure the Airport connection is selected. Click the "Advanced" button in the resulting window. When the new window opens, the "Airport" tab should be active; if not, make it so.

In the center is a list of all the networks to which you've connected. Clear out all networks that you do not use on at least a weekly basis.

I had the same symptoms as you on a MacBook Pro running 10.5 at the time. After a trip, the thing was almost impossible to wake from sleep. I used Console to view the system log and noticed that, on waking, the computer was trying to connect to the network of a lodge where I'd stayed ~10 days earlier and miles away. I cleaned out a list of about 30 old neworks, including the lodge, and the problem went away.

I now do a little network housekeeping every time I return from travel.
