I am trying to delete some of the "Music Videos" from the iTunes PLAYLISTS.

If I select it it highlights in blue, the EDIT > Copy is selectable but EDIT > DELETE is greyed out and not selectable.

O.K. after a bunch of search on iTunes help I could not find the answer.

Then I used the search function here and I found this same questions Archived here without an answer.

So then I started looking outside of this website and finally found the answer.

Just select the video you wish to delete in iTunes and hold down the shift+alt+cmd keys and then select the delete key.

Why it has to be so complex and why the answer is buried is beyond me, but this works and I wanted to post it in case anybody else runs across this problem.

Note that the items at top left of iTunes (under Library) are not playlists. They are the library.

If an item is in a playlist, Delete works fine to delete it only from that playlist.

You can't delete items from a Smart playlist by pressing Delete. You need to change the criteria to remove an item from a Smart playlist.

Select an item in the Library and press Delete will remove from the library and all playlists.

Shift Delete will delete an item from any/all playlists and the library.

In general I would agree with you, but I think you are dead wrong with Music Videos.

I have a video that is meta tagged as "Music Video" and it only appears in the Music Videos in the playlist.

That video does not appear anywhere in the library it only appears in the Music Video Playlist.

Unlike the Music in the library, then everything you said is correct.

Music videos are in the Music library.

All items in iTunes have to be in the library. All playlists are simply a list of items in the library.

Select any item then right click > Show in and it will display everywhere that item is.

I am fairly new to the Mac and not really sure what a smart playlist is, but if I want to remove a video from the playlist I think to selecting it and then hitting the delete button should do it. I was wrong. You need to select the video you wish to delete in iTunes the itunes playlist and hold down the shift+alt+cmd keys and then select the delete key.

That is all I was trying to do delete one video from the music playlist without deleting the file from the library and I simply could not find the answer in the help. Then I found others here had the same question which was my reason for posting the solution I found. Your way would work also but I would not know where to go to edit the criteria of a smart playlist.

A smart playlist will pick items based on what you choose.

For instance, the Music Video playlist simply chooses all items tagged as a music video.

To edit a smart playlist, select the playlist then right click - edit playlist.

There are many ways to use a smart playlist.

All 5 star rated songs.

All songs added in last 2 weeks.

Songs not heard in last 6 months.

You can set all different kinds of criteria.

Ozzie MANY THANKS for you digging to find the answer! I was one of the people that had trouble removing music videos from my playlist and your right the Delete button by itself did not do the trick. Its the combination of keys you mentioned that actually did the trick and why is Apple keeping this a secret? If I download a full length movie and then want to delete it, I just hit delete and its gone same with music. So thanks again!

You wanted videos removed from your iTunes library.

Note the the iTunes library is not a playlist. A playlist consists of items in the library. Can't have an item in a playlist unless it is in the library.

Items in the library do not need to be in any playlist.

why is Apple keeping this a secret?

They aren't. It's in iTunes Help (in the Help menu) and also here -> http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/shortcuts.html

As noted previously, you are not simply removing the item from a playlist. You are removing it from your library.

Since it's no longer in the library, it cannot be in a playlist.

All you need is Option (or Alt) Delete. Don't need the Shift key.
