ZR24w monitor not working w/ MBP 13

Hello folks, just purchased an HP ZR24W to use as the external display with my MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.4 GHz. When I hooked the display to DVI/Mini displayport adapter, monitor turns on for one second and then goes dark. I am about to return this monitor but thought I would see if anyone else has had this issue and solved it.

I have been using this set up with an old Apple Cinema Display with no problems for years. However this display is long in the tooth and has screen defects. I would like to get another non-glare monitor that is appropriate for graphics work. Not sure why the Apple display works fine and the HP display will not work at all.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

TIA!!

I bought a Dell U2410 because it is another affordable IPS matte display which is supposed to be good for color calibration and Photoshop use. I have not got it set up yet. I tested it and it was making a very loud humming noise, however from what I read on some message boards I believe this noise will be quiet if I set the brightness to 100%. I found the noise so offensive that I boxed the monitor back up again. Apparently Dell has the monitor by default set at 50% brightness. Still need to get it back out and attempt to hook it up at 100% brightness to see if the loud humming sound goes away. It does seem to work with the MacBook. Up until now I have been using an Apple Cinema Display which is an older matte screen. However the display has developed serious defects in the screen, older CRTs used to last forever. These LCDs seem to last about five years.
